You should only run one antivirus application. Most anti-virus programs will incorrectly identify other anti-virus programs as being "infected" when in fact they simply contain the virus definitions; the patterns to look for when searching for viruses.

this may sound a little stupid but i am not exactly brilliant at msn messenger but could soemone please kindly xplain wot a trojan detector is.

It's an application that specifically detects and removes a limited number of trojans, similar to but not as comprehensive as anti virus software of firewalls.
