Your cousin uses keystrokes. Meaning he most likely memorizes them. Which is a pain in the arse.
The character map anyways specifies the keystrokes that your cousin uses. So over all - either way you get the same charaters... but the character map is easier because there is nothing to memorize. (and there are a lot more charaters than you could ever memorize... )
