privacy settings msn

I am hoping someone might know how to be shown as offline and still be able to see who on my contact list is online. After I am signed in to msn messenger it takes a few seconds to initiate the appear offline status button and by that time, everyone knows I am there. Also, is there any way to message with one person without the others knowing? Is there possibly a third party service that might be able to control all privacy settings and allow me to hide from all and respond only to those I want to talk to? I am just looking for a way to hide and still have access to the messenger service.....many thanks from a beginner....

There isn't a way to do this using MSN Messenger. Some people have used Trillian, which allows you to set and remember your status for MSN so when you login, it automatically logs in with you as "away" or "invisible." But even that won't let you chat with other buddies while appearing offline.

Yahoo Messenger lets you do this, and it's also possible with AIM if you first setup a direct connection to your friend, then logout of AIM (yes, it really does work!). But for MSN, no way.

There is a program listed here that trys to acheive that but it seems to be quite buggy at the moment.
