    Cannot connect for Passport sign-in

Howdy. I have been MSN deprived for a week and it makes me sad.

I am unable to connect - when trying to sign in on Messenger, I get the old
    • the sign in name does not exist
    • the password is incorrect
    • the Passport service is temporarily unavailable
message. When I first tried to retrieve my password, the web page that opened up gave me the old "The page cannot be displayed" page. Searching around for resources, I discovered that I could not sign in to Passport at any site ... "The page cannot be displayed" always comes up no matter where I am trying to sign in. I did follow Microsoft's instructions regarding checking LAN and proxy settings (which weren't the problem). I have never purposely set up any kind of firewall and I am the only person who uses my computer. I am running Windows 98. I know that the sign on name and password I am using are correct (I set them up again on another computer).

Please help. I don't want to fool around with setting up another messaging system and trying to convince my 30 MSN contacts to switch to that one. And when I tried Trillian it crashed my computer repeatedly.

Thanks in advance for your help and insights

I wasn't quite sure from reading your post, but have you tried logging into your passport account from another computer? Maybe if you have one at your house, or just try it at a local library or something. If it works there, there is something wrong with your connection or settings.

Can you login with other passports at all? Such as an old one or try registering a new one or something.

    Hi. Thanks for responding.

I have not tried logging in via MSN on another computer. I guess I can try at a friend's house tomorrow. I do not have MSN installed at work and would probably get chewed out if I tried to install it. I reset my password simply by visiting the site from work, which I cannot do from home. I am pretty much convinced that there is something happening with my connections or settings that is not allowing my home computer to recognize Passport sign in facilities.

I just tried registering a new passport (here at home) and once again got "The page cannot be displayed" when I filled out the form and hit the 'register' button. This computer just won't recognize any connection to Messenger servers.

    [EDIT:] Bump.

Interesting ... I went to the Yahoo Messenger main page and hit 'Acct Info' and got the same, immediate 'The page cannot be displayed'. Bizarre. Didn't actually install the software since I don't actually want it. I can, though, if it will help in your diagnosis.

    Thanks again

Hmm...If it doesnt work for either Messenger perhaps it has to do with your Internet settings. Try messing around with some of the settings and try the sites again. If you succeed please try to post what you did here, so it may help people with future problems.

Hmm. Just tried resetting my internet security settings all to their defaults. No soap. Will keep you posted on further developments. Found a Microsoft support board, posting all this there. Guess I'll start holding my breath now.
