Can't send or recieve files.....

Hi my mom is having a problem with my mom's msn and Icq. She can not send or recieve files on either one.. she can recieve a small file up to 76kb but nothing higher or it times out. She is running windows 98se and has a P1 350mhz computer. She is on DSL through sympatico highspeed on the basic plan and can download stuff at 16.kb/s however when recieving or sending it goes at 408 b/s and times out or stops..please help.

Hi it obviously isn't the firewall if it's letting some through. I have included a site that lets you check out your connection to see if it's optimized for it's potential speed just to see if that's any help as I don't know what the answer might be.http://www.dslreports.com/tools
I guess you could give it a go because 16kbs doesn't seem right for a highspeed connection unless it's only a 128kb connection.

Sympatico High Speed basic plans will only go at a top download speed of 20 kb/s. I've found from experience on average usually only 15 kb/s.

momof2, would your mother happen to have Kazaa or any other P2P program running in the background while she attempts file transfers on MSN n' ICQ?

i once saw an article on mess.be long time ago about configuring ur ports manually or sumthing like that for sending files thru msn. before that i couldnt send files through my messenger . i have tried but didnt find it again if anyone knows sumthing about it plz tell...

I went ot the website listed above and i have sympatico high speed edition: basic and it says that i can dl @ 949kb/s and ul @ 135kb/s
go fig

Any way i have the same problem and its pissing me off cause thats all i do is send and recieve big files like games and **** like that.
could someone help me?
