MSN Messenger 6 freezes my PC, advice required ple

Hi Guys,

I'm new here and really hope you can help with a problem I am having with MSN version 6, which I never had with version 5.

I have dowloaded MSN messenger 6 and installed it, and when I try to run the programme, it freezes my PC so I have to Ctrl, alt&Del, then shut messenger down.

I am running windows ME and have the following programs running.

ZoneAlarm
AVG virus checker,
McAffe Guard-dog

I never had this problem with version 5, but, I dont have version 5 anymore, so I am stuck with this one.

I cant open outlook express without running MSN,

I have already taken MSN messenger out of my start-up, and have taken the tick out of “Automatically log onto windows messenger” in Outlook.

But, it still opens MSN messenger when I open outlook, and freezes the PC.

I have worked out that if I shut my Guard-dog down, then it works.

I cant workout why MSN messenger 6 is conflicting with my guard-dog. The last one never.

If I try to close down MSN messenger whilst outlook is open, it says

“There are other applications currently using features provided my MSN messenger. You must close these other applications before you can exit MSN messenger. These applications may include Outlook, Outlook Epxress, MSN, MSN Explorer and internet explorer”

I don’t really want to shut down guard-dog just to use outlook and MSN.

Also, I f I log into hotmail, the same thing happens, my PC freezes, I have to ctrl, alt , del to close down the hotmail screen, shut down my guard dog, and then go back into hotmail.

When I ctryl, alt, del, it shows MSNMSGR not responding.

I don’t suppose anyone knows where I can get version 5 from? It worked fine for me.

I am running the up-to date version of MSN 6

Thanks.

Did you also close the 'Contacts' panel?

Also, keep in mind that certain websites can also make use of MSN Messenger. I know of certain forum software that does for the functions of their MSN Messenger buttons. BigBlueBall does not do this unless you click the icon, by the way.

As for the freezing of MSN Messenger, try installing all the latest updates available for your operating system from the Windows Update website. You should also try removing MSN Messenger completely and then re-downloading and re-installing it.

Thanks DJH

I tired what you suggested, but had no luck

I have now find version 4.5 at OldVersion.com, and that is working fine.

I'm quite happy to stick with this version.

Thanks for all your help and advice

I personally too still stick with an older version on my home system. I think MSN v5.0 and above are way too colorful. I like it plain and simple.
