Image reversed (mirror image) on webcam

MSN 6 seems to work ok except that on my webcam the image is reversed (mirror image)... this does not happen on this camera with any other web cam software I have , including the program that came with the camera ,and it makes it impossible to show any writing ... ... my op sys is win XP home ...The webcam is Philips ToUcam pro PCVC740K

The camera works normally in windows movie maker.. etc

That is not normal Saiyaz.

pmelbourne - Perhaps some more information will help. What brand of camera are you using, and what is the model type?

On my computer with a Logitech QuickCam Pro using MSN Messenger 6, I go to Tools > Web Camera Settings > Advanced > Advanced where there is a section called Image Mirror. Here I can specify if I want to flip the image vertically or horizontally. I'm not sure if the same options appear for all cameras though.

Thanks Jeff .. I have found a way in my camera tools to horizontally flip the image .. I have never had to do it before so wasn't aware of it .. of course you have to remember to reverse it in other applications like windows movie maker .. to me it looks like MSN is possibly using a different standard to other applications .

There is another twist in the tail on this mirror image tale. I had another webcam contact tonight and was told that if I selected the picture , that I could see ,to be the correct way round for me to read text ; then it came out the other end the wrong way round ..SO on the basis of this contact it seems that MSN shows you a mirror image ( what you are used to seeing of yourself whilst shaving etc) whilst at the other end they are seeing you as others always see you without a mirror .. so it should be set to give a mirror image at your end . If anyone understood that would they please explain it to me LOL LOL

One day I was talking to my girlfriend on MSN and I had my webcam on. I wrote real big on a peice of paper, "I LOVE YOU" When I put it up to the webcam it looked mirrored to me, but she said that she could read it fine and that it looked normal, so who knows.

I have the exact same problem. You don't easily see it, but putting something with text on it in front of the webcam is a perfect test.

Indeed, without any special mirror settings the other person sees the image correct, while you see yourself mirrored horizontal. Very strange...

Is this the same with other instant messengers?

If this isn't a bug, what is Microsofts (and others?) reason for making this work like this?

There an option in MSN Messenger 6.1 beta (I never really checked 6.0, sorry) that will let you mirror the image locally so you will also see what the other sees. It's in Tools > Web Camera Settings.
