New MSN protocol to block third-party IM clients?

Updated September 18

On October 15th, Microsoft will cease support for older version of MSN Messenger that don't use at least the MSN Protocol v8. This includes products such as Miranda, Gaim, Trillian and others.

I'm going to keep tabs on which clients will work, and which won't, along with any proposed upgrades or patches and their schedule.

Please post any news that you have about third-party clients and the MSNP8, or share your opinion on Microsoft's policy change.

IM Programs likely to be blocked on October 15th
  • Gaim (read more)
  • MSN Messenger 4.7 and earlier
  • Miranda IM 0.3.1
IM Programs that should still work with MSN after October 15
  • Trillian Pro 2.0
  • Trillian Pro 1.0d
  • Trillian .74e
  • Easy Message 2.3
IM Programs to be verified
  • APNI.NET
  • EveryBuddy
  • MECA
  • Odigo
  • Sonork

I thought they GAIM said they would support v9 of the msn protocol, their concern was in the legal area of would Microsoft license the protocal or allow them to use it. And even if they do licence it could they afford it. Thats how I understand the message on GAIM

The message from GAIM states that "...we will be supporting MSNP9, the latest version of the protocol, soon." My interpretation of that is that they do not support it yet, but will at a future date (whatever "soon" is).

Just as Trillian .74 and 1.0 do not support the necessary protocol, but Trillian 2.0 does, I'll update the info with appropriate version numbers and projected release dates as soon as they become available. If you hear before me, please let us know.
