How do you check if hotmail users have messenger?

I was wondering...can a person appear on your contacts list if they do not have MSN messenger? How do you check which people have messenger and which do not? Thanks.

Hello Mica!
Sure they can appear in your contact list.
Anyone that has a .net passport, msn or hotmail account can be added to your contact list with no problem.
So, even if they are not MSN Messenger users, you can add them to your list.
There is no way that I am aware of to check directly if they are regular users...but it is just common sense. If they donīt use it, or never used it, they wonīt have a display name, and their e-mail address will be shown instead. Obviously, they will always appear offline.
Of course you can choose not to have a display name, but that is very rare, I just know one person that doesnīt and I bet he didnīt realize!
So, if you see that days go by and there is only his/her e-mail address displayed....then they probably donīt use it. The bes option then will be to send an e-mail and ask them to use it so you can talk to them (MSN can do it for you if you want with a personal message).
