messenger help, can't change any settings

I am having a problem with messenger 6.0
Messenger will not let me change any of my general or personal settings, in options. The problem seems to be that the "my status" box is completly grayed out. I am unable to put a check beside My Status or change the minutes amount.

This would not be a big deal except that when I try to change any of my general or personal settings and then click OK, a popup screen tells me that the number in the minutes box must be greater then 1 and directs me back to the my status area.

So as it is messenger is now starting up everytime I start my computer and I cannot change any of the settings.

I removed messenger and reinstalled it but the problem persists
