Outlook Express and MSN
A long time ago I uninstalled MSN messenger from my computer. However, one of my friends just got it, so I downloaded the new version and installed it. To my dismay, I realized why I uninstalled it in the first place. Every time I open Outlook Express, it opens MSN messenger, and it won't let me close the messenger until I close Outlook first. I unchecked the box to have it start automatically and I have no problems when I start my computer. But when I open Outlook Express it still tries to open MSN Messenger, then gives me an error that causes MSN to close, and then Outlook works fine. Shouldn't there be a way to stop it from opening without getting this error message every time?

I believe only Windows Messenger has that annoyance, but perhaps you have the two confused, in any event try this fix:
Assuming your using XP: (may work for other OS, but not sure) How to disable Messenger from running when starting Outlook Express 1. Load Regedit 2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Outlook Express 3. Create a new DWORD and name it Hide Messenger 4. Make the Value 2 [color="DarkOrange"]ShiftThis.net |

It is MSN Messenger, I don't ever use windows messenger. I am running Windows ME and do not have access to regedit. To stop AIM or Windows messenger you just have to unceck a box. When I changed the properties on MSN it no longer starts up with outlook, but I always get an error message.

Simply renaming your MSN Messenger Folder or exe file will of course prevent it from auto loading, but you will find other problems errupting from this, (ie. you likely can't play MSN games now). OE is still looking for MSN on startup, and it doesn't like it that it can't find it. You have to disable this the proper way, or face the problems with your current fix.
Have you tried this out yet? In Outlook Express, click Tools, and choose Options. Go to the General Tab and clear the "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" box. Click OK. Also, try out some of the advice listed here - http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/disabmes.htm [color="DarkOrange"]ShiftThis.net |
