In more detail with Amy's elaboration on what is causing the connection problems, I decided to try my own one on one chat with a tech, and here's what he told me:
Question: Requesting assistance with the error 0x81000370.

Nick: Hello Graham, thank you for using MSN Interactive Online Support. My name is Nick and I will be your Online Technical Support Engineer. I look forward to assisting you today.
Graham Coats: Thank you. How are you today?
Nick: I am doing good, Graham. Thank you for asking.
Nick: I would appreciate if you can please briefly explain me the issue you are experiencing so that I can pinpoint the issue and provide you the appropriate resolution in order to resolve the same.
Graham Coats: I am under the understanding that your servers are having issues at this time connecting with the .NET services like Hotmail, and MSN Messenger. I was wondering if you couldn explain to me: Why the ones who didn't sign out are still able to send/receive IM through MSN Messenger, how some are able to gain access to Hotmail and their accounts, and how some are able to log in now, and others are not. Also if there would be a rough time-stamp on how long it will take your tech's to fix the problem.
Graham Coats: Also, if it is a problem with your services, why does it throw people off by giving the errors that it is their internet connection that has a problem?
Nick: Thank you for explaining me, Graham.
Nick: I would like to inform you that people who are already signed in, may or may not affect them. However, people who are trying to signing now, will not be able to do so. I cannot give you the exact time when the servers will be back. The estimated time that is given should be within the next couple of hours.
Nick: I hope you will extend your full support towards us.
Graham Coats: Definitely. Now is there a reason to why it is giving me and others different error codes including that our internet connection is the problem? And possibly WHAT exactly cause the problem?
Nick: Graham, the cause of the problem is that MSN Severs are undergoing regular maintenance. Hence the problem. Please do not worry; there is no problem at your end.
Nick: Do you have any further questions about the information that I have sent you?
Graham Coats: Is there a exact time you do "matience" monthly - etc?
Nick: It is not monthly. However, It is done at a regular basis. I cannot tell you the exact time, Graham as it is done by the server side technicians.
Graham Coats: Understood. Thank you for your time.
Nick: Graham, it was a pleasure chatting with you about the Sign in issue today. For your convenience and future reference, your ticket number is ******** you will receive by email a detailed transcript of our chat. Thank you for choosing MSN Internet Access as your online service provider. We are available 24 hours, 7 days a week. If you need further assistance, please come back and visit us again.
Nick: Thank you for your cooperation and patience. Have a great evening.

Still not back for UK yet. But quite honestly, it's so peaceful today, no-one's saying:
N00b: "Hey, ASL Plz?"
Faizan: "You added me, where the hell did you get my email from?"
N00b: "No, you added me, so tell me your ASL or I'll delete you!"
Faizan: "Oh please delete me"

Does anyone know what went on in this Maintanance? Is it related to the 6.2 release? It was quite long for a 'regular maintanance'
DME was here, and DME did this

Quote from mess.be:
UPDATE 2: After about eight hours, all services are back up'n'runnin'... My god, we just passed another Live Outside The Box Day :P
"It was a completely internal issue," the Microsoft spokesperson states in a PCWorld article. The problem had nothing to do with hackers or the security patch for MSN Messenger (6.1.0211) that Microsoft released earlier this week, she adds.
Service complaints came mostly from the U.S. and Canada, but users outside of North America may also have been affected, the spokesperson says. Users who were already connected to the services were for the most part able to continue using them, the issue primarily affected new log-ons, she says.
