Does MSN Messenger contribute net usage?

Currently on a dial up plan, my usage is out of control. I go way over my download limit each month. I read on a message board that MSN messenger, if installed incorrectly, can make your usage go out of control. Does anyone know if this is the case?

Cheers.

What are your download limits?

I'm pretty sure that unless you are using MSN for heavy file transfers, it uses very little bandwidth. I doubt that it is MSN that is causing you to go over, unless you have VERY low limits. MSN uses very little bandwidth, but it does contribute, somewhat.

Just out of curiosity.... what the hell are you downloading on dial up to exceed your monthly limit? Which ISP is this? Maybe you should look into another one. In Canada, I've switched back to Sympatico, and in the month of Month, I've downloaded more than a gig from Kazaa alone. - Sympatico have never emailed me, or phoned me to complain, or to say that my limit will be truncated.

It is in changing we find purpose

My monthly limit is 1000mb. I have no idea why I use so much as I don't download music because I go over. It is definitely my computer because I have used other peoples accounts with different ISPs and still have a high transfer. Maybe my surfing habits have changed, I am a bit of a window piggy, loading up to 10 windows at once. Now that there is a broadband price war in Australia, I rang up yesterday to get it connected. Unlimited high speed here I come. Thats why I was worried about MSN as I will have 12gb limit and then it slows down to dial up speed, which is not really a problem but annoying all the same.

Thanks for your thoughts.
