Can't view custom emoticons in MSN Messenger 6.1

hello. I am having trouble viewing other people's custom emoticons in MSN messenger 6.1. I have the latest version and I am using windows xp pro. When people post thier custom emoticons they always come up as blank. I have view custom emoticons turned on. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and tried about everything else and I still get blank messages when people post custom emoticons even though I still have the option of viewing custom emoticons turned on even though everyone else can view them. how do I fix this problem? it is getting annoying. thanks for your help.
