Microsoft Sued by S.Korean Instant Messaging Rival
Daum Communications Corp, South Korea's top Internet portal, said on Monday it was suing Microsoft Corp and its Korean unit for alleged unfair business practices related to instant messaging software.
"Microsoft used its dominant market position by bundling its Instant Messenger program to its Windows XP operating system and that has caused significant damage to Daum," Daum said in a statement. "By using its dominance in PC operating systems, Microsoft is excluding rivals from Internet messenger markets." Daum, which has its own messaging service, said it had filed a 10 billion won (US$8.74 million) indemnity suit at the Seoul District Court. Officials at Microsoft Korea could not immediately be reached for comment. Source: www.forbes.com Full Article: http://www.forbes.com/technology/new...tr1328669.html |

Also, Look at messengers like Yahoo, AIM, and ICQ. They are very successful because they are good services and have good software (most of them). If a program cannot compete with Windows Messenger, it must suck. Wannabe programmers should not go and try to make themselves populer by destroying the good services.
Microsoft is just simply trying to provide all the things you need for a good computer experience when you first install your computer. So if you want to play music, you wont have to go download a media player off the net, and if you want to IM, you wont have to go search for a messenger. |

If you don't want Windows Messenger, don't buy a Windows operating system. It's your choice. This is like saying that Microsoft shouldn't include WordPad in Windows because users won't use WordPerfect. AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, they were all successful (To a point), why? Because they designed, coded and distributed the software. Oh, last time I checked AIM does not come pre-installed on any Operating System. I'm not really a huge Microsoft supporter, nor am I fully against them, but can you honestly say that if you created an operating system that it would be devoid of all software? I guess adobe can say the same, because MSPaint comes with Windows, and IE too. Messenger services are popular because they are distributed and are widely-known. Daum? I've heard of a lot of IM networks and services, but never anything about Daum. Maybe it's possible that they have poor marketing strategies. |
