How to fix "no sounds" with MSN 6.2

This is not very complicated, follow everything I say, and it should work for you. Don't worry if you don't know about the windows registry, I explain everything easily. I just figured out a solution to this problem, so here it is. You need to be able to edit your windows registry. In it, there are places you have to edit to get sounds working again. If you go into "Sounds" in the Control Panel, you should see a section called "MSN Sounds", and if you had the problem I had, there are no events there that you can put sounds for. Go into your registry (run "regedit"), under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, go to AppEvents, then EventLabels, scroll down, and there should be 4 MSNMSGR_"something" places. MSNMSGR_ContactOnline, MSNMSGR_NewAlert, MSNMSGR_NewMail, and MSNMSGR_NewMessage. Click on each of these, and over on the right side of the regedit screen, something with "(Default)" should come up. Right click on this, and go to "modify". Change this value to whatever you want to see under the "Sounds" config in the control panel. I changed them to "Contact Online", "New Alert", "New Mail", and "New Message" respectively. Once this is done, reboot. Then go to the 'Sounds" under the control panel, and now under MSN Messenger, you should have 4 events that you can put sounds to. I hope this works for you, and maybe stupid Microsoft can fix this problem in their next release. You suck Microsoft, use Linux people!!

BWA I don't think Microsoft had any intentions of having this many bugs in MSN Messenger 6.2 (atleast we hope not ). Do we have to remind you that they do not have to give us this service for free? Try to be thankful for what we do get instead of insulting them. Do you think you could do any better?

The Linux software I use, including the not-by-Microsoft MSN messenger for Linux works better then Microsoft Windows 98 and the windows software I use. I understand your point about them giving it to us for free and we should be thankful for that (although they are not doing it out of the kindness of their hearts, they gave us MSN for free because they wanted to compete with free Yahoo IM and free ICQ, for part of the messaging market), but when you get all the software for free on your computer (Linux), AND it works better then a lot of Microsoft's software that they charge you for, I see a good reason to complain. You're paying a lot of money for each Windows upgrade and the software for it, and when so many crashing problems and security flaws show up, you have to wonder if you're really getting your moneys worth. I personally think MS Office is a great product, possibly the best I've seen from Microsoft. I think they're OSes are junk, nice on the outside, but junk and choas on the inside. I enjoy discussing this, please continue with your argument....

hey BWA i'm not here to argue really. I just wish people would cut Microsoft some slack. Hopefully in the next release of MSN most of these bugs are fixed. MSN is one of the most popular IM and we should be happy for what we got and not what we should have; who's to say what we should have? MSN has yet to get better anyways, all we need is patients. See what mac users get for an MSN Messenger, MSN Messnger 4.0!! I know mac users who would love to have MSN 6. That is one area Microsoft could pick up in, which they are but its still a slow process. So lets not complain...and lets start being thankful.

Kriego15, atleast try to be sensible about this when adding a post. We try to be a friendly bunch of people just trying to help each other out. Atleast use some better choice of words. We do not want to offend or threaten people, which is strickly abusing the purpose of these forums. Maybe think twice next time
