no. iPods use a different storage and naming system, so you have to use iTunes to update. as much as i hate using iTunes, it's really not that bad when you only have to use it to occasionally update.
Is it possible to just Drag and Drop songs into my iPod (Windows Explorer) and have them play, without having to special software like iTunes, Winamp, etc.

Yea, iTunes is ok....its just that it renames all the MP3s, I don't like that.
...? it renames them all? Dude... you have a really annoying "option" enabled in iTunes. Go to 'Edit > Preferences' then the 'Advanced' tab... make sure the 'Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized' checkbox is UNchecked.
i made the mistake of checking that one when i first got my iPod, and spent a while renaming all the tracks back to how they should be. luckily i have enough skill in programming to whip up a quick program to do it all for me, but still.

It is unchecked...
Like iTunes puts the songs into Folders (F01, F02, etc.) and the song names become like letters and numbers, when you view hidden files in Windows Explorer.
oh... i misunderstood. who cares if the songs on the iPod itself are named differently? Those are only for the iPod to figure out... you dont need to see the files on there. as long as the files on your computer are named properly, that's all that really matters.

Yea, its just when you wanna use the iPod as a backup, or use it to transfer songs to another computer, you have to end up renaming them all manually again.
There's gotta be some patch out there that can make the iPod 'Drag-and-Drop' compatible...I have another MP3 player that's like that, and its so much more convenient.
you can use the iPod as an extra hard drive to back up songs on, but they won't be playable. they'll be just like any other data file you would want to store on your iPod - stored, but not usable as such while on the iPod. it's just how its system works - it uses its own naming structure so it knows what is what.
bottom line: you can store songs on your iPod named however you like, but you cannot play them unless you use iTunes to transfer them.
