I like the Windows Vista software firewall, its better than any other software I've used.

i'm using a Lavasoft Personal Firewall and i don't know how effective the software is.can any1 recommend a better firewall software?Or is it good enough.By the way i use DC++ to download stuff from other users.Does that pose any risk?

i have another query.
i'm using a very slow DSL connection which give me a download speed of max 7 to 10kbps.and i'm using a software called Netlimiter to monitor the Download and Upload Speeds. It also tells me the amount of data recieved and transferred and which program is downloading/uploading.My problem is,even when i'm not downloading anything or viewing any site, when i open the Local Area Connection Status window,i can see that packets of data are being recieved on & transfrerred from my computer. But when i open the Netlimiter to check if some program is downloading/uploading anything,it doesnt show anything. In fact,it shows that no packets of data are being recieved/transferred.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening?Of course, i don't know much about computers(or the internet or LAN,for that matter). So maybe somebody can tell me what is being recieved and transfrerred from my PC?Do i have Trojan on my PC?
Would appreciate if someone could throw some light on my problem.

Sounds like you got yourself some spyware to me. Have you ran a scan recently? If you don't already have a program, I would recommend spybot or adaware.

I use Microsoft Windows OneCare Live Firewall and I'm very happy with it. The OneCare package is not free, but very affordable and provides license for three PCs (since most people I know have more than one PC in their house).

I'm with Spike and ShadowdogMU. I use only the firewall on my router & I've never had any problems. Sometimes multiple firewalls can conflict causing difficult to diagnose problems with IM's & I prefer to avoid that at all costs.

I do think anyone doing P2P sharing should have some added layer of protection as a precaution. I've heard from several people Comodo is excellent, and very easy to configure. For times I travel & need to enable one, as David said, the Vista firewall seems more than sufficient. (Of course it comes with some of the Vista headaches but that's to be expected.)

I'm using Zone Alarm Free 7.1.078.000 with Windows Vista x32. Don't know when they'll be coming out with Vista x64 capability. You could check their forums.

question

SO if an ip address is nothing more than a way for comps to communicate with one another, then what are all the hack blocks i see on the list that my firewall blocks? i mean they are all from foreign lands it seems and it shows their ip address and the attempted hacked port? and there are tons of them every second as im sure you all receive also, so what are those people behind their ip's trying to do? hack right?
