Hope you will like this

Yahoo! provides "presence" for our Yahoo! Messenger ID statuses, this nifty little bit of html allows our Yahoo! Messenger ID status (online/offline) to break out of the standard availability on our Yahoo! Profile or 360° pages and onto our personal homepage/s, forum profiles, email signature files etc, in fact anywhere that html is permitted. Simply edit the code they provide with your own messenger id then cut and paste the html into the desired location.

If you're currently logged into your Yahoo! account when you access Yahoo! Add Presence your cut and paste code will be all set to go with your ID automatically inserted and available for use, if you're not logged in or which to use an alternate ID then you'll be presented with their stock standard example html code....

<a href="http://edit.yahoo.com/config/send_webmesg?.target=dairyman88&.src=pg">
<img border=0 src="http://opi.yahoo.com/online?u=dairyman88&m=g&t=2&l=us"></a>

in their example the user ID is dairyman88, all you have to do to personalize the code is replace dairyman88 with the ID you wish to use, this needs to be done in two places
the link....
<a href="http://edit.yahoo.com/config/send_webmesg?.target=dairyman88&.src=pg">
and the image....
<img border=0 src="http://opi.yahoo.com/online?u=dairyman88&m=g&t=2&l=us">

so using my Yahoo! Messenger ID beegeeknz, my cut and paste code (once edited looks like this....
<a href="http://edit.yahoo.com/config/send_webmesg?.target=beegeeknz&.src=pg">
<img border=0 src="http://opi.yahoo.com/online?u=beegeeknz&m=g&t=2&l=us"></a>

which generates the following display by default....

so if I'm online you'll see... and when offline......

which is kinda cool but personally I find that size a littlebig and in your face, but all is not lost, there is a tweak which you can use that gives 2 other size/display choices...

and...

both these are available from Yahoo! (not an external site or script) all you have to do is change the image code they provide...
<img border=0 src="http://opi.yahoo.com/online?u=URMESSENGERID&m=g&t=2&l=us">
will generate 2 this style

img border=0 src="http://opi.yahoo.com/online?u=URMESSENGERID&m=g&t=1&l=us">
will generate 1 this style

<img border=0 src="http://opi.yahoo.com/online?u=URMESSENGERID&m=g&t=0&l=us">
will generate 0 this style

so if I wanted to use the smallest display my code (with my ID) would look like this...

[B]<a href="http://edit.yahoo.com/config/send_webmesg?.target=beegeeknz&.src=pg">
<img border=0 src="http://opi.yahoo.com/online?u=beegeeknz&m=g&t=0&l=us"></a>
which generates this....[/b]

For your Online Status to visible to others you need to make sure that the presence option is enabled in your Profile, you can access this a variety of ways, either directly from in Yahoo! Messenger via Messenger > My Account Info > Create/Edit Profiles, or Messenger > My Profiles > Create/Edit My Profiles or you can take the direct approach and just head to http://edit.profiles.yahoo.com/config/edit_identity.

The box must be unchecked for your status to be publically available, check out Yahoo!'s What does "online status" mean? if you're unsure what it's all about. Do remember if you're juggling your status, visibility or using stealth settings then you will need to be aware that where ever your online presence is posted/placed (your own personal homepage, signature files etc) then it's visible to ALL the general public regardless of if you have them "blocked" or on "ignore" via your friends list. Long and the short of that is, if you're having problems online with someone being a rat bag etc then DISABLE this feature immediately via your Profile settings as with it enabled, if your status is set to online they WILL be able to see you're logged onto Yahoo!.

That's not really news but kuddos on the work you did putting this together. This should be moved to the yahoo help forum however. Also you should check out the OSI's they are much better than the Yahoo Online Indicators in that they work for all messengers.

dvelez: This thread should be equally here as well as in the Yahoo room, so since shergill posted it here it's fine.

shergill: Great work on this, thanks!

Status buttons or chat buttons for web pages

Hi Spike, hope this is the right place to post. if you are Spike from WebXpertz then Hello again. if not just hello

Anyhoo, I am making a web page that needs status buttons, or buttons you can click to chat to a specific user for:

AIM ICQ Yahoo MSN and if possible Skype Trillion and Jabber.

I have been using YIM for years and have the code already

EG: <a href="http://edit.yahoo.com/config/send_webmesg?.target=web4uktv&.src=pg">
<img border=0 src="http://opi.yahoo.com/online?u=web4uktv&m=g&t=2&l=us"></a>

I got this code from Yahoo.

I already found this site which says it can provide code for the rest:-

www. onlinestatus. org

They seem to do code for AIM, ICQ, IRC, Jabber, MSN, Skype and Yahoo

I guess I could use their code but I thought getting it straight from MSN, ICQ etc might be better. Is it? Do they all supply it? if so where?

Also i found this code for MSN.

<a href="msnim:chat?contact=MessengerBloggers@hotmail .com">Chat with me!</a>
<a href="msnim:add?contact=MessengerBloggers@hotmail. com">Add me to your contact list!</a>
<a href="msnim:voice?contact=MessengerBloggers@hotmai l.com">Voice chat with me!</a>
<a href="msnim:video?contact=MessengerBloggers@hotmai l.com">Have a video conversation with me!</a>

Will this work? Will it work on any browser?

Anyway, any help would be welcome.

Best

Keith

Keith,

Great question! Thanks for posting and welcome to the BigBlueBall.

You're generally correct that using the direct code from the various networks would be the very best and (theoretically) the most reliable method of displaying your online status. Unfortunately, not all of the IM networks provide such code, which is why www.onlinestatus.org exists in the first place.

IM networks that provide online status code:IM networks that do NOT provide online status code:
  • MSN/WLM
  • Google Talk
To fill the gaps, there are a number of third-party solutions for displaying online status, even on WLM or Google Talk. One of the oldest is www.onlinestatus.org - which is actually a server-side, java-based system that still requires you to connect to one of the public OSI servers. Alternatively, you can setup your own, although you've gotta be pretty tech-savvy. The nice thing about OSI is that you can create your own status graphics (if you're into the ultimate customizability).

Widgetbox also has a number of status indicators, including for WLM and Google Talk.

If you know of any other solutions that work, let me know!
