Richest, most robust, most unique user experience

Two questions here....kinda' long winded (sorry!)


1. Which of the open source multiprotocol IM options out there gives the developer the ability....even if it takes a lot of time and effort....to create the most ROBUST, RICH, and UNIQUE user experience?

...robust (most user control over their own "IM experience")
....rich (most pleasing to the eye to look at)
....unique (allows for features or functionalities that will SURPRISE the user because they won't have seen them ANYWHERE ELSE....the "WOW!!" factor)



2. Which is a "must have" if voice chat is also a priority? Is it the same one you would recommend for the first question (about the user experience)....or would it be different?

Good question but please remember that your asking other peoples views and experiences you may not agree. So don't rush out to download something if you don't already have it. This way you won't be disappointed.

If you want to toy with something, I'd suggest downloading Trillian Basic (or buy Pro ). It's skinnbale, and if you know the language, you can even write plaugins for it (Plugins are only available to Pro users, but I'm sure anyone is welcome to write one!) I find it "most pleasing to the eye", and it supports Video and Audio Chat.

Now, this also depends: Are you just looking to use a program or actually customize it yourself?

Spike...thank you for the reply. We will be using whichever tool we select as the framework on which will no doubt be some ambitious customization. The end users are going to be folks who will become part of our small online community.

I'm not the techie side of our team....and am hoping you can help me with more of a "mental picture" about just how "cool, unique, and robust" I can go with Trillian Pro.

What are the "extremes" that you can imagine being done that would really create a "WOW!" reaction from our users....and that would be "new and innovative"...and that wouldn't disrupt the user experience just for the sake of being "cool"?

Man, oh man....there's a lot to that question. I see that. Please just give me whatever comes to mind.
