Which instant messenger is the best?

I have always used AIM...but alot of my friends don't have AIM so I started using Windows Messanger (Live)...I can get all my friends no matter what they use..but I want to know which is the best...for my computer...not slowing it down...getting things attached to it...etc...any inputs would be helpful. Thank so much

I'd recommend using a multi-client program if you'd like to minimize memory usage and integrate all your contacts in one place.

I like Trillian Astra (but the WLM file transfers are very slow). Astra runs at about 11,000K on my machine. Digsby is also a good alternative, and I believe they have made significant memory improvements in recent months from what I've read. Take a look at the interoperability matrix to see some other choices.

You'll do better with one multi-client running than several stand alone programs.

If you want to talk to several different people on different chat networks, I'd recommend Digsby. I really like it and talk to people on Facebook Chat, AIM, MSN, and Google Talk.

However, if you want a hosted instant messenger, I'd recommend the IM client that I freelance for-- Brosix. You can download the free version at Brosix PUBLIC Instant Messenger

What exactly is the difference between hosted and mulit-client messanging? Which one doesn't take up much space or slow my system down? I'm not familiar with any of these so sorry for being dumb dumb like

With a multi-client program you can indeed add your contacts from any other supported network with no issues. Take a look at Digsby - you can always try it and if you don't like it you can always try something else.

You are simply accessing your contact lists on the other networks - not moving them to another place. So even if you like the idea, but Digsby just isn't the right fit - you can still try other programs.

When you download and install Digsby you will be able to set up to login to your various instant messaging accounts. Your contacts will be pulled in automatically for you.

Take a look at the "Getting Started Guide" on the Digsby website. I think you'll find the answers you need in there.
