trillian uses non-default browser to open links...

OK, in the preferences>events>advanced (the tabs) there is one called "Message:URL" I have set this up so that when a link is mentioned, it should open auto in opera. But I have to fill something in in the "arguments" box to get this to work...because it just opens up an "about:blank" page right now. I just don't know what to put in the arguments box.

If you're using 0.74 or Pro 1.0 I'm afraid what you're asking isn't possible because these programs don't support event "variables". If you're testing the new version (2.0 Pro, see the sticky at the top of this forum) then you should put in the arguments box (including the %'s):
