Trillian Pro 2.0 Final

Trillian Pro 2 Final is out and from what I've heard it's a rush release so expect bugs. I would actually give my opinion but as I write this the Cerulean servers are fubared (probably overloaded) so I can't even view the site let alone download the final

Well - their IRC/MSN <=> Trillian filetransfer code still sucks bigtime...

I can receive files on both but i can't send 'em

As I said it's a rush release to try and get it out before peoples subscriptions started to run out. I've had no problems sending files to MSN though and I use mIRC for IRC as I found Trillians IRC a bit memory intensive in very full rooms. My main gripe is the way it handles formatting tags on Yahoo. Really sloppy code. But all in all a good upgrade from version 1.

My main question is that seeing how Trillian now calls home to check your username and password what happens once your subscription ends?

I'm downloading now. It will be interesting to see about the subscriptions are handled. I checked my payment history and my original subscription began on September 10, 2002 (which would mean it's expired). But it also showed my payment for a second license for a friend back in December.

In either case, their download server was too busy earlier. After waiting a while I was finally able to download the new version and I'm installing now.

I also like the look of their web site redesign much better. Can't wait until they get their forums updated to match!

Posted news story about the new release. Check it out and let me know if I left anything important out.

The webcam feature in Yahoo works much, much better now (not draining my resources and maxing-out CPU utilization).

It seems that most users assumed that the phone home feature wouldn't be a part of the final release... And are most unhappy that it has remained... I guess I can see their point

It says on the Trillian News site "http://www.trillian.cc/news_press/" This:

2) Membership. As a token of our thanks to everyone who continues to support our efforts, we have ensured that all existing customers will get their hands on Trillian Pro 2.0 (lots of sleepless nights coding!). However, those of you with accounts set to expire soon will need to renew your subscription to continue receiving new releases and support. Note that you will always be able to run the products you've purchased in the past!

Think Different!

One thing I like about 2.0 is that in the alert box for MSN it shows the contact's display picture. It's a nice feature that MSN might want to consider adding too. I haven't really tried anything else yet, but file transfers are no problem.

Zargeus, I hadn't read that, but was happily surprised when I saw that although I'd bought my copy for Pro 1.0 on 9-11 last year, I could still download 2.0 yesterday.

Yes I can still log on to the website even though my account was started on 11-9-02. I still say that the dialling home is a bad idea as it is putting increased pressure on Ceruleans servers and, as has already happened once, if their servers go down nobody can start Trillian.

In regards to the MSN buddy icon thingy in systray alerts you will also see it when you do a mouse over on their name in the list and in the message box if you have the buddyicon holder visible. You can set an MSN buddy icon for yourself using the buddy icon in preferences. If you view a users webcam on Yahoo the last picture gets used as a buddy icon for Yahoo or if you wish you can actually set a picture to be used for a buddy.

Peronsally I don't like the dial home idea for that exact reason, if the server is down, no trill.... then are we going to load MSN/Y!/AIM/ICQ/IRC and Jabber all on just to connect to our contacts until the server comes up. Defeats the purpose. I understand the need to protect themselves against software piracy but what would it be like it windows XP had to 'dial home' in order to boot? Or the Pentium V chip had to authenticate with intel in order to start the computer. Once you pay for it, put the liscense in it, and go already.

Here is another respective. You have some corporations that block at the firewall a lot of traffic to cut down on recent viral attacks and to keep the people working, not chatting on their IM. Many of these companies (mine included) do allow certain mediums such as AOL/ICQ and Yahoo, but block most everything else. If the ports from the admin level are blocked, there defeats anyone from purchasing trillian for their use at work since it won't authenticate and thus won't start. As an admin I don't have to worry about blocking as I can get through that, but most of our employees may not be able to (just one company perspective here) I got trill for the use of it's Jabber (since we have our own jabber server) as well as other mediums but the idea of calling home I think is more trouble then it's worth.

Just my 2 cents. Nothing more.
