Gizmo Makes All Phone Calls Free

Posted by Jeff Jeff is offline on 07-20-2006, 07:39 PM

Things get more and more interesting in the VoIP world. Not long ago, Skype announced a program where residents of the U.S. and Canada get free long distance PC-to-phone calls within those two countries, but only through the end of 2006. Now Gizmo Project had one-upped Skype, offering free PC-to-phone calls all over the world, from now on.

This is not a limited time offer, but a new feature that allows you to call regular land lines or mobile phones in over 17 countries for free, and free calls to land lines in another 43 countries.

All of this freedom doesn't come without a catch, of course. In this case, both the caller and the recipient need to be active Gizmo users. To be considered active, you must register a Gizmo account (which is free), and place one call using Gizmo. To receive calls from a Gizmo user on your regular land line or mobile phone, you've got to add those numbers to your Gizmo profile. Then when someone calls you using Gizmo, if you're not online, the call is forwarded to your regular phone line.

This appears to be a move to grab a bigger market share from Skype, but it's a lot of work to get your friends, family and associates to register and install a new program. Still, if you regularly make international calls, this could save you a ton of money.

It works perfectly for me! :-))

I'm in New Zealand - my girlfriend is in WA, USA.
We generally talk PC-to-PC via YM, Skype, etc - but now we've both signed up to Gizmo either of us can call the other on their normal home phone (and talk for as long as we like) for absolutely FREE!

The sound quality is virtually perfect too, despite us both being on dialup rather than broadband.

How low can these deals go ?
(Next - tell me a company that will PAY US to talk ! ;) )

Now there's a perfect example of the beauty of Gizmo. Everyone better be looking for Eagle_Kiwi and his gal on the next Gizmo commercial. I can see it now . . . *dreamy music playing . . . split screen, Eagle_Kiwi and his gal talking on a phone*
"Hey gal"
"Yeah, pal?"
"With all the money we're saving using Gizmo we can finally get together in our favorite spot."
"Wow, pal, that sounds wonderful" *dreamy look in her eyes*

Next scene at the airport, Eagle_Kiwi waits, searching for his gal and she appears from the tunnel surrounded by a halo of light (because she must be an angel to have hooked up with Ian ;)

They fall into an embrace *slow motion* and out of the airport and into the sunset they go. Ready for all the adventures that await them.
