Netmeeting and XP MS Internet directory

I have installed NetMeeting from the run menu (conf.exe) and have Windows messenger and have also tried msn messenger 5.0 .
My problem is this: The video conference window in messenger is tiny, tiny, tiny.......
Netmeeting is far superior for window size and also you can send video to non XP users and non camera users.
but netmeeting logs into Microsoft Internet Directory OK but can't seem to see my users that are online in messenger. WHY? are they not really compatible? Am I forced to use an ILS server Directory? with tons of listings I would rather not see. (It's hard to beleive there are so many people who want to see such stuff) Messenger Buddy List is great but If Netmeeting can't see it , then what? Please help.........

Good news! You do NOT have to log in to an ILS server to establish a Netmeeting connection with a buddy on your Messenger friends list.

Here's how you do it:

• From Messenger, right-click your buddy's name (assuming they're online, of course)
• Pick Start Netmeeting from the pop-up menu.

This should open a message window with an invitation link. When they click the link, it will launch NetMeeting for them and try to establish a point-to-point connection. That's it!

That sounds good but the problem is that windows messenger 4.7 for XP and MSN messenger 5.0 and also 4.7 I think no longer have that option.
Maybe I have to go back to an older version?

Not necessarily. The other option is to connect via IP address. Send an IM asking them what their IP address is. If they don't know (they probably won't off hand), they can look it up at http://www.whatismyip.com

Then in NetMeeting, go to Call > New Call and in the To: box enter your friend's IP address and click the Call button. That should do it.

Thanks Jeff for your help. Using the IP is the way I have been doing it, but on cable my IP changes every week and others as well. So the buddy system seemed an answer apart from ILS. I'm going to try an older version. . I have a friend using Windows 98 with some version of messenger, and his has the start NetMeeting option. I'm going to check and see if I can get it to run on XP. I'll let you know if it works on XP.

Have you heard of any web sites where they are doing MCU (Multipoint Conference Unit) service cheap or for free. or have beta/shareware software available as a server apart from hardware solution?

It's been a while since I replied but I have found out a few things since.

No matter what version of Messenger you try to install in XP it always adds the menu with Start a Voice Conversation orStart a Video Conversation. No matter what version you install in Win 98 it adds the menu Invite to Netmeeting. So, if you want to use netmeeting in XP you can't invite by menu or directory (messenger directory) you have to have a WIN 98 connection invite you or an XP connection send you their IP address.

I have had problems with Windows Messenger locking up and gobbling up 98% of my processor usage and had to nuke it from task manager processes. I removed it, unhooked the Outlook connection and installed msn msg 5.0 and it seemed to work better until yesterday when it did it as well. ???

Hi all..
I just stumbled across this fourm while trying to dig up information on Multi User Chat programs. here is my situation.....

I have family scattered all over the place, I have tried many different programs that let a user host a conferance ie:Roger Wilco <--- BLOWS!!!! . Comm Centre, Battle Com, etc etc.. but none of them come even close to the quality of MAN, or MS Netmeeting. PROBLEM is MSN you can not do a multi chat, & Netmeeting most if the ILS Servers are next to impossable to get on to. Is there any way to make Netmeeting or MSN work so I can talk to say 3 or 4 people at the same time?? if not, are there any voice chat programs that I may have missed. I am not too terrably concerned with the Vido or any other bells & whistles (however they are nice ) as I am with audio quality.

Any help would be very muchly appreaciated

I have a few questions. I'm using Netmeeting with a friend. I can call her by IP addy, but she cannot call me. Now, I have a router with my DSL. She cannot call me by my IP addy at all. And yes I am using the right one. I'm not using the one from my router.

The other problem is that she can hear me, but I can't hear her. We can voice chat on Yahoo Messenger, so speakers, sound cards, mics are all working. We have checked and rechecked our controls on both ends.

She is using cable-modem on a proxy server. She also has Windows 98 and I have Windows 2000.

Anyone have any ideas?

btw, I am going to try to contact her thru msn messenger too and see if that works, but it almost works with the IP addys and don't know why it doesn't.

I hate to say it, but Net Meeting is not very Router Friendly. I have a USR 8000a router & I am also having one heck of a time. MSN on the other hand (MSN 5 Anyhow) works like a charm.

Check your router manual; if it is a Linksys router they have a very detailed online manual for their routers I just grabbed the first link regarding Net Meeting here what they say...

Net meeting does not function properly or establish a connection when used with the Linksys Router.
S O L U T I O N
the Router's newer firmware releases 1.39 and higher have been reported to work with NetMeeting. If you need a newer firmware release, you can download it from our ftp site at http://www.linksys.com/download.

If you have a different brand of router check their website for updated firmware follow the procedures to flash your routers firmware (ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR ORIGIONAL FIRMWARE)

Reset your router as described in the flash procedure, then go back to your routers website & do a search for "Net meeting & NAT" with any luck you will be off to the races.. If not do what I do... I keep my system behind the router for general & everyday use & I have a hub for specific problem programs like net meeting.

Here are the steps I took to route everything, keep in mind these are the same steps for DSL/Cable/dedicated etc.

1: Cat 5 cable from DSL/Cable Modem to UPLINK of HUB
2: using (for example) port 2, connect that to your ROUTER (some hubs will share either port 1 or port 4 for the uplink for expansion reasons, so make sure you know which port is shared with your Uplink on your hub.

Then just release/renew your IP as normal as you switch between the router & hub.
