Logitech Quickcam Pro 3000 freezes Yahoo Messenger

Is this a common problem? There doesn't seem to be any way to fix it. The funny thing is, this webcam came with an install file for Yahoo Messenger right on its installation disc so there shouldn't be any inherent incompatibility issues. My sister has the identical webcam and hers also freezes Yahoo.

What happens is this; when I go to start the webcam through Yahoo Messenger nothing happens. Then Yahoo becomes unresponsive and nothing can be done with it. At this point I can not even close Yahoo, not even through task manager. The only way to close Yahoo after that is to reboot.

I have had the cam for about a year now and it has always done this (same for my sister). No other application is using the cam when I try it with Yahoo. I have also gotten the latest version of Yahoo as soon as it comes out.

I have Windows XP Pro with an Athlon 1800+ and 512 MB PC2100 DDR RAM and the latest version of Yahoo Messenger. My sister also runs XP with the same webcam that I have but I am not sure of the specs of her system. Both of our webcams work fine with Netmeeting or any other application that accesses the webcam.

I've had Yahoo IM freeze up when I tried using the same webcam as yours. There might just be an issue between Yahoo IM and the QuickCam Pro 3000, but I never bothered contacting Yahoo about it since it's easier to just use MSN Messenger, which almost everyone I chat with uses anyway.

If switching to MSN Messenger isn't an option, I can't do anything but suggest you try contacting Yahoo's support and see if they have an answer as to why their messenger's webcam function won't work with your webcam.

This is an old thread now but I just thought I would say that this advice works. If you have problems with Logitech cams working with Yahoo Messenger then give this registry edit from Yahoo a try; it worked perfectly and instantly for me. I was very pleased.

I can not take the credit for this fix but ut did work for me in regards to an applicatuin hang when invoking My logitech Webcam

cut and paste these 2 lines below into a text file, and name the file whatever you want however, the file name extesion should be .reg (a registry key entry). after save the file to any folder, right click and select MERGE option on top to merge the Webcam setting key value to winxp registry to enable webcam function.---

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Yahoo\Webcam]
"UseVFW"=dword:00000001

Addendum- I could not import the above as a Binary registry key. So I placed it myself

This a Bizzare workaround that worked for me !!!
I am actually using Creative Webcam, but I have similar problem.

Try this...

Install Trillian messenger Pro (there is Basic and Pro version, but both are free)
Log in to Yahoo account in Trillian messenger Pro
Invite someone for video chat, press stop button on video bar.
trillian hangs,
leave trillian hanging..(don't try to kill it)

Start yahoo messenger and start webcam, it should work..
