"Peeping Tom" worm circulating around the net

The Register reports that a new worm with the capability to use webcams to spy on users is circulating across the Net. Rbot-GR is the latest variant of a prolific worm series that exploits security holes of Microsoft Windows.

"If your computer is infected and you have a webcam plugged in, then everything you do in front of the computer can be seen, and everything you say can be recorded," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. "It would be like having a regular web cam conversation except you wouldn't know you're taking part in it."

That's really freaky....I think that's why a LOT of people I know don't hook up their cams when not in use, or put a black cloth over them and or face them the other direction. This was unfortunately only a matter of time.

I want to point out that this has no relation to the "Peeping Tom" AIM program I have in my "Latest and Most useful AIM programs" topic.

Thanks for this information.

Can this worm be detected by Adaware or Spybot?

Oreo - those are great suggestions!

...and I thought nobody was looking when I was pickin' my nose!

I wouldn't have thought such programs can detect it, just make sure your virus definitions are up to date. The whole concept is quite worrying though.

Why not cover the front of your webcam.

Do this by using

(compass) used for drawing circles
(pencil)
(scissors)

1. Take your pencil and place the front of your webcam carefully so the circle is facing down on the card or paper. Circle round the circular thing on your webcam. You now have a cover for the webcam lens cut round this carefully. Now to make some more covers you need to use your compass and put the needle exactly in the centre of your new circle and put the pencil holder exactly on the line with the needle in the centre still. Now attach the pencil to the compass and start drawing some more circular covers. Now when you have cut out them all carefully place this between the plastic at the front of the lens and the lens its self just so it doesnt touch it. Now you have covered your webcam from these perverts. To remove them get some sticky tape and with a very small bit attach the sticky end to the cover and remove at will. Repeat the process above to put the cover back on. Just wait until the pervert tries to view it one day he wont know what hit him.

This solution was brought to you be

Or I could simply do what Oreo said and cover the cam up with a cloth, or turn it around.

True True Very true but doesnt it give you a sense of relief knowing that the pervert is only gonna get a black square thus making the trojan useless.

Honnestly the way the internet is going their will always be much badder trojans out their. The only way round it is to include a must install anti virus and firewall program with the operating system people buy. That way trojans will be much more harder to actually work.

Or you could install an operating system that is trojan- and virus-proof in the first place, like Fedora.

Ain't that the truth. I have been trying out different "flavors" of Linux, and the more I learn, the more I like it.

If ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy?
