Microsoft expands Windows XP messaging
CNET In this article, CNET reports that Microsoft has already readied itŒs first update to Windows XP. This is notable for two reasons: First, although XP is now being shipped preinstalled on some new computers, the boxed version wonŒt be available to consumers until October 25. October 25 is also the date that the update will be released. Second, the update is primarily for the new instant messaging service: Windows Messenger. Windows Messenger is available only for Windows XP, and is very similar to the free MSN Messenger. Windows Messenger expands the functionality to include enhanced audio capabilities and video conferencing. CNETŒs article goes into detail on how Windows Messenger is MicrosoftŒs attempt to expand their IM market share by encouraging third-parties to develop extensions that allow you to track stocks, auction bids, etc., possibly even conducting transactions. They liken the battle for IM market share to the browser battles of a few years ago. What CNET doesnŒt say is just what the update to Windows Messenger does? My guess is that Microsoft is adding in functionality that allows the third parties to build in what are now being called ".NET My Services."
