That did the trick. I should additionally slam MSFT for making the install/uninstall UI for the WIndows LIve package completetly non-intuitive. It asked to check what programs I'd like to Install or Install... so I checked "windows Live Messenger"... and it uninstalled everything BUT that (since I'd checked it on. GRRR... had to run the installer again and reverse my selection.

Thanks for your help.

Here's some more info for those of you having problems Uninstalling Windows Messenger 9 Beta wave 3. You apparently need to uninstall ALL of the Live beta components before you can re-install version 8.5 again.

I was getting the "catastrophic failure" failure error even after uninstalling version 9. I then ALSO uninstalled Live Movie Maker and photo gallery betas which automatically uninstalled some additional MSFT components. Only then would running the the 8.5 installer work.

Alright -- anyone find it annoying to have to scan all OUT going file transfers now for viruses?!

I had to send off a .zip file before a meeting, short notice to a colleague only to be told NOPE! Screw you! - with love, from Microsoft.

Where can I find the file to add Norton Anti Virus scanner to WLM? :p
