Right, I've been unable to sign in to MSN Messenger 6.0 for months now.

I'm using Windows XP Pro, connect to the internet through a local HTTP proxy server and I get this error message (almost immediately) when I try to log in;

"Sorry, we were unable to sign you in to the .NET Messenger Service at this time. Please try again later."

I'm going to try installing 6.1 and windows messenger 4.7 and hopefully one of those will work.

Hi Kids!

I have yet another possible solution for you all. This is going to sound REALLY strange, but open up Internet Explorer... (yes really!)

Click Tools
Click Internet Options
Click the Advanced tab
Scroll all the way down to the security options and make sure both of these boxes are ticked:
Use SSL 2.0
Use SSL 3.0
Click OK

Have another go at logging in and see what happens. It might actually help you out!

Hope I helped!

PS - Make sure you're using the latest virus software and that you have a firewall in place to stop those nasty worms that can cause these problems

Don't forget to look before you cross the road!

hey..i tried all the advices written here but nuffin works, the "solution" with the regedit and so on doesnt work and I can't install 6.0 or any other older version,because it tells me I have to get the latest version, but since I got it the first time my MSN doesn't work.. that's about 1 month ago now..it is always this 0x81000301 error, btw my trillian, icq, amsn and dmsn dont work either..i've already reinstalled everything about 10 times and it still doesnt work, thats kinda frustrating.. I don't have any proxy or something like that, does some1 have another advice what to do thanx a lot

I have been suffering with the same problem as you all and it's been mind numbing trying to find someone to help me. AOL and MSN are both completely useless!

Finally though I fixed the problem and I hope it helps you lot out there as well.

I found a web site which told me to check my MTU setting on my ADSL modem. Apparantly AOL only works upto a MTU of 1400. Most modems will preset themselves to 1492. I changed mine to 1400 and at first it didn't work. So I changed the other two fields as well which were MRU and MSS.

MTU = Maximum Receiving Unit
MRU = Maximum Transmitting Unit
MSS = Maximum Segment Size

I set MTU to 1400, MRU to 1400 and MSS to 1340. I only set the MSS value lower because it was 60 less than the other 2 originally but I have no idea whether or not this is correct until I do more investigations.

After doing the above I found that MSN worked immediately! and IE now works at lightning speeds! Thanks for nothing AOL! It's taken me hours and hours to fix this problem myself!
