I also had the problem of Installing MSN 6 because of 1603 error. I figured out that a pop up stopper program of mine was causing this.. If you have ad-aware 6 and have ad-watch activated, right click the icon in the taskbar and chose terminate, then install..

If this helped anyone please tell me, I want to know if this was actually causing it. Thanks!

I've e-mailed MSN about this more times than I can count, and it's not a solution but I figure it's better here than as a seperate thread...

I get a 1603 error when I try to download 6.2 (or 7.0 Beta, come to that) over 6.1. And if I try to uninstall 6.1 using Control Panel it just loads up Windows Installer for a couple of seconds, closes it again then refreshed the Add/Remove Programs list. And scrolling down to MSN Messenger 6.1 tells me it didn't uninstall.

Now MSN have told me to do x, y and z to fix this and none of the solutions offered have worked. I even deleted part of my registry on their instructions (and as a result my PC doesn't even have a volume control on the bottom-right tray). I'm using Windows ME.

So can anybody help me out with this? Sorry if it doesn't belong here, but I'm really really stuck...

Yet another possible (simple) solution that worked for me.

Launch the MSN Messenger (6.2) installation program. When you get to the error message, don't click OK. Go to your start menu and open Messenger. Now all you have to do is Ctrl-Alt-Del and end task on the isntallation software. This causes to not uninstall the files that were previously installed.

If you can't open Messenger after you closed it, try this other solution. When you get to the error message, copy paste the folder C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger to MSN Messenger2 . Close the installation software with Ctrl-Alt-Del and rename the folder to MSN Messenger. Then create your own shortcuts.

It didn't work on my computer with Messenger 7.0 beta but you can try it.

I'll be damned, Now I can install 6.2 without any problems, but still can't install 7.0 beta. Tip: don't install beta versions!!!

email me for any comments or questions: steph@bxnapkin.com

Error 1603

I fixed it by this way:

Start - System Tools -System Informations - Tools - Restore the System to before the uninstallation of the MSN Messenger.
