Backlash - You have obviously tried one of the solutions offered from this thread, but there are more to choose from if you read through the entire topic. Have you tried all of the solutions offered here?

I cannot make myself any clearer.

I hope this will help.
I resolved this way.

(I use Win98 second edition)
1. Scanned hard disk w/surface
2. reinstall windows
3. reinstall explorer
4. install msn messenger.

it worked !

I think the problem was files lost or corrupted of W or explorer.

I wouldn't ever consider Reinstalling Windows a solution to this type of problem, It's more hassle than it's worth.

Reinstalling just explorer would probably have done it, I'm not sure why you would reinstall Windows before reinstalling explorer...

My OS is WIN2000, here is what I did to fix error-1603:

1. right click c:/Documents and Settings/your-folder/Local Settings
2. Properties->Security->Add
3. Add user "SYSTEM", and enable "Full Control" permissions to it
4. Apply above change
5. re-install MSN Messenger 6.1, it worked now

Note: actually, I added user "everyone", after installation, i just removed it from the user list.

Good Luck

Going to Microsoft likely won't solve anything, reading this entire thread just might though.

For me, the suggestion of turning off my popup blocker (AdAware) did the trick.

1603 fix for winxp pro/6.1

Hello freinds,

I have winxp pro, and I was trying to install messenger 6.1.

I had the following error messages as shown here
http://www.chroniclesofjoy.com/1603.gif

I tried all the solutions offered in this thread and none worked.

So I just said what the hell and went and downloaded msn messenger 5 from here http://g.msn.com/7MEEN_US/EN/NT4/SETUPNT.EXE
and then tried to upgrade the program. It didnt do that either.

After installation of 5 and unable to upgrade, i went and tried to install 6.1 on its own, and voila. It worked. I have no idea why it worked.

Please note that i had first unzipped the 6.1 download executable w/ winzip before running the msi, as sombody else in this thread had said to do.

Any ways good luck!

I ran this program and it asks you which program you want to repair. Then just remove the peoblem that gave problems and reinstall the program
