I also had the problem of Installing MSN 6 because of 1603 error. I figured out that a pop up stopper program of mine was causing this.. If you have ad-aware 6 and have ad-watch activated, right click the icon in the taskbar and chose terminate, then install..

If this helped anyone plz tell me, I want to know if this was actually causing it. Thanks!

IF your running Windows 2k or Windows XP and are getting the 1601 error message, BE SURE that the Windows Installer Service is RUNNING. I found that mine was set to manual instead of automatic. Started the service and ran the install and it worked. To check, goto Start --> Settings --> Control Panel, Click on Administrative tools, then find and click on Services.. Then look for Windows Installer, which will be way down the list as it's in Alphabetical Order. Make sure the service is running, if not, RIGHT click on it and choose Start, you might also want to change it to start Automatically to avoid problems like this in the future. Please note that I did do the msiexec /unregister and msiexec /regserver thing before finding this.
I tried this solution, but when I tried starting my Windows Installer service I got the following error message:
Quote:
quote:Could not start the Windows Installer service on local computer.
Error 109: The pipe has been ended.
Anyone know how to fix this? I've already tried every other solution here. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I had this same problem. I am using MSN Messenger 6 and Windows XP it would not upgrade to the latest version. I tried some of the solutions in this forum but they did not work. I found something that worked for me.

Disclaimer: I work as a software developer so for the less technical this might be a bit daunting..

This is what I did:
  • Close MSN Messenger
  • Download MSN Messenger 5.0 from http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=msnm
  • Rename C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger to zzMSN Messenger (it wont be found but you can restore later if you need to)
  • Open regedit (start > run > regedit) - Warning: be careful in there
  • Goto HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger
  • Rename it to zzMSNMessenger
  • Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MessengerSer vice
  • Rename it to zzMessengerService
  • Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSNMessenger
  • Rename it to zzMSNMessenger
  • Install MSN Messenger 5.0 (if you can't install you might have to use the "Windows installer clean up" tool described in this thread to remove the installation information for MSN Messenger 6 - I did this before I tried to install v5 but I am not sure if it is required)
  • Run MSN Messenger 5 and check that it can logon
  • Download MSN Messenger 6 from http://messenger.msn.com/Download/
  • Install it and it should upgrade to v6
  • Check that it can logon

If you can't get it to work you can rename everything from zz back to the original names.

I found it helpful to turn on logging when installing the MSI packages. To do this you need to open the MSN Messenger Setup EXE with winzip and extract the contents into a folder. Then open a command window (start > run > cmd.exe) and go to the folder with the MSI packages then run %windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /i msnmsgs.msi /l*v msnmsgs.log You can then read the log file that is created to get more info.

Hope this helps

Ross

So: Extract that damned Self-Extracting Setup.exe, or SetupDl.exe,
and JUST RUN THAT F*CK*NG MsnMsgs.msi..
Xcuse me my being so irritated..
