Well, you should have deleted the rtcdll.dll file (version 4.2.4874.1005)
before installing MSN 5. So MSN 5 can overwrite it.

EXIT messenger. LOCATE THE RTCDLL.DLL FILE. My computer ->C:->WINDOWS->SYSTEM32 (or SYSTEM folder) there should be a file called
rtcdll.dll - rename it to rtcdll.old by right-clicking the file to see the menu-choose-rename-switch .dll to .old and hit enter) or just delete
the file by pressing delete.

Now you can either re-install V5 (remove the old first)
or just drop off (let's not tell Microsoft) http://petem266.tripod.com/
and get the necessary file(s) (unzip them first).

Once you have renamed or deleted the old rtcdll.dll (4.2.4874.1005)
in your system32 folder and re-installed MSN 5. You should now
find (if using 98 etc) a file with the version 4.0.3599.0 in that folder.
Now if you wish to use MSN 6. Take the rtcdll.dll (version 4.0.3599.0)
and COPY it to a safe location (drop it on your DESKTOP if you like) so it won't be overwritten by 6. Now install MSN 6. Drop the file on your desktop
back to c:\windows\system32 to replace the bad file installed by 6.

Sorry, but this is the most simple way I can explain it :S

http://petem266.tripod.com
now has temporarily! the files
and instructions but If this is against
forum rules remove this bit from my post.
I doubt Microsoft is happy about their dll files
being spread even if it means a chance for fixing
a bug they were too dumb to get sorted
despite beta releases.

Curious if bill gates intends to fix this...all previous versions of messenger worked with vox, this one decided nope, never, too bad.Short of replacing my customized messenger for that dll file is there somewhere i can get the older dll ?.I did a search and couldn`t find.

I feel very foolish and very old and blonde as well. I am still attempting to obtain voice with MSN. I thought I had done as Petem had explained but I guess I have done something wrong ...here is what has occurred, can anyone help to unscrabble my mess. I seem to have downloaded that rtcdll.dll file from Petem after deleting the old corrupt file. Then I tried sending the new rtcdll file to my desktop (mind you I still am not sure how I was going to get it to go back to where it was supposed to be later on)...it did go to the desktop. My next step was to go to the add/remove place and remove my old msn in preparation for re downloading the old version of MSN 5.0. When I arrived at add/remove and highlited the MSN 6.0...then clicked the add/remove this its what it said...........The feature you are trying to use is in a network resource that is unavailable. Click ok to try again or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package msnmsgs.msi
So I highlited the only other path that it allowed me to use and retried...but the same message came up.
Soooooo then I thought maybe if I just go to Oldversion.com and re download MSN.5.0 it will just override everything and download.....but it doesn't...It said that there was already another versin of MSN there and it needed to be removed before i could proceed. So I am back to square one of not being able to get rid of what was originally there before I can proceed. Any suggestions with this one guys????? Yahoo is looking more and more attractive.

hi, i tried changing the rtcdll.dll file as you suggested and it allows the connection but ends the voice connection straight away. does the other person have to do this fix as well ?

Im using windows ME and my GF win 2000. does she use the same older dll as me if we need to update her?

also the rtcdll.ddl file when i do a search it appears in windows/system and C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking .RtcDll_6595b64144ccf1df_5.2.0.4868_x-ww_b168a28c

do i update both?
