I tried to fix my audio problems with petem's instructions but it just doesn't work.

If I copy the old version of rtcdll.dll to system32 folder it somehow changes itself to that new version. I'm running XP Home. Anyone else got this problem?

Did anyone answer to the member question of what if the rtcdll file shows in different locations? In my XP, I see the file name in 3 folders. And one of them has a different file size from the other two. Also, I see instructions referring to pre Win XP versions as well as Win XP pro. How about the Home XP. What file version does Home XP need? I am ready to bang my head against the wall not getting the sound to work after more than a week of trying.

Hi Liza!

As far as i can see, from the small images, this is a little program that replaces the rtcdll.dll file on win98 systems. It's not actually a patch, but just a tool for those people not too familiar with folders & files on a computer. Replacing the file manually is the same thing. And I think the program can be used for all language as the rtcdll is a Real Time Communications client controller and doesn't care if you speak Swahili, Swedish or French :-). But as I said it's a very small image and I don't read french, unfortunately.

I don't know if people here are interested in a translation?

This is best i can do if anyone can improve please do so
Translation
Problem: Since that I installed MSN Messenger 6 under Windows 98
the vocal conversation does not work anymore!!!
Solution: The problem comes with version of rtcdll.dll
that is installed with MSN Messenger 6. This dll puts problems
with Windows 98 this that prevents all communication audio.
The provisional solution the time that MSN corrects this bug
is to replace this dll by the one book with MSN 5. We have therefore
does a patch that replaces automatically the dll by a that works.
Here how to proceed to repair this problem
1- Download the Patch that we did: Click here for telecharger the patch
2-if MSN Messenger is opened Leave next click It on the workable one Patch-Audio-MSN6-Win98.exe
that you have just downloaded
3-Click on the Following button
4-in the following window an installation file by default you proposed,
leave the one proposed or choose in another (this file is necessary to
the case or you would wish to deinstall the patch) then click on the button
To Install.
5-the installateur must detect a more recent version of rtcdll.dll click on
the button To Crush in order to replace the dll
6-once the finished installation click on the button OK. and get going again.
Attention: If you start up MSN Messenger 6 since the icon on your office or
the one that is situated in the menu To Start up verify that this these correct
short cuts for sometimes this shortened is corrupt and it resettles MSN Messenger 6
this that has for effect to cancel the profits of the Patch To The case or you réinstalleriez
by the continuation MSN Messenger 6 the one here will replace the dll byIt
is necessary for you therefore to resettle this patch.

I have XP home and found the file rtcdll.dll version 5.1.2600.1106 cured the prob'm which I got from messinger 5 download. I don't know if this rite but I dragged the other rtcdll.dill files onto my desktop and this seemed to stop my computer defaulting to the latest version but took about 30 secs for my Pc's harddrive to come to terms with what I had done. Anyhow msn messinger works fine now but can this cause damage? I know HOW my computer works but only THAT my programs do (is this normal?)

hi petem
your instructions worked perfectly. Altho the file is in windows\system on my comp, not windows\system32.
This seems to be a problem on 98 only (and probably i guess, Me)
The usual shoddy support of older OS's by microsoft. I know its a 98 problem on my comp as I have a dual boot system accessing the net via a router, and XP worked fine without this fix.
ps petem couldn't find this fix anywhere else, I suspect it's helped many people, who can't say so because of the drag of membership
cheers mate
