messenger not being able to find display pics

i have a pretty annoying problem with MSN Messenger 6.x. For a while now, when I enter the display picture menu, I get a message saying "Your display pictures cannot be used. Please create new ones." Ok. So I create new ones, whether it be from personal photos to the ones Microsoft has on their download display pictures page. Here's the catch: when I exit the menu, hitting OK with the picture I want as my display picture selected, the "Display my display picture" checkbox is still unchecked (even if I check it before or afterward) and if I go back into the menu again, there are no pictures in there like before. As I said, this is a really annoying problem. I've tried reinstalling Messenger, tried updating from older versions, yet nothing will work. Any help would be nice. Thanks.

Are you sure you have the box checked in the privicy tab, where as it says Do not display my display picture... as this is a shared computer?

I've been getting pretty much the same problem as fxnt for a while now, and it's not a problem with selecting the wrong options. I've been unable to find a way around the problem, and I'm not 100% sure what causes it, but I beleive it may have something to do with different file formats. I've only had this problem on one of my computers on which some of my display pictures are .gif, but I've not had this problem on my other computer where all my display pictures are .jpg

*UPDATE*
just solved this problem. here's how:
i went to my application data directory where all the display pictures are stored. (link to thread: http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/to...?TOPIC_ID=9758)
I just deleted the directory and restarted messenger. Problem solved!
