We need to know the version of Messenger you are using. And when exactly did this start? Do you have any additional programs installed for Messenger?

It is in changing we find purpose

If this problem started to occur a short while ago it might be a temporarily server side issue. If that is the case the best thing you can do is wait and see if gets fixed with time. If you don't want to wait you can try the following things:

If you have a firewall try turning it off and see if the problem reappears.

Also check if a proxy server is enabled in both MSN Messenger and Internet Explorer. If this is the case remove them and your problem might be solved.
To do this first open MSN Messenger and click Tools, then Options... and go to the Connection tab. If the options "I use a proxy server" is enabled, uncheck it. To check Internet Explorer, run it, go to Options, then Internet Options... go to the Connection tab. Now select your connection and click settings to see if a proxy is enabled.

If you are using a router to connect to the internet. Does MSN Messenger work flawless on the other computers? Have you tried to connect the computer having problems directly to the internet?

If your problem is not solved after this, can you answer the following questions aside of the ones detn8r provided:
- Does this problem start in the middle of a conversation or after you have been away from your computer for a while?
- What version of Windows do you have installed, what type of firewall do you have and how are you connected to the internet?
- Do you have a up-to-date anti-virus program and anti spy/adware programs installed?

Greetings,

Sjoerd

The version i'm using is MSN Messenger 6.2.
This started happening about a month ago. The only other programs I have running are Windows Media Player and Continuum (A little online game, you should try it)

When it happened the first time, I used MSN 4.7 and it worked fine but now when I try to log in with it, it wants me to download a later version of MSN.

There is no specific time when this occurs. It has happened to my mates too so I doubt it's anything to do with my PC or connection.

Have you tried the steps that I provided in my earlier post?
Windows Messenger asks for an update because there have been some security issues. The newest version is 5.1

Are you streaming with Windows Media player? If so the problem might be that you don't have enough bandwidth for MSN Messenger.

That your friends have had the same problem doesn't mean that it had the same cause.
Do your friends live in the same area and maybe have the same internet provider?

Some live in the area, some live about 15 miles away. I'm the only one on this internet provider.

I've tried the stuff you said in your earlier post and it still happens.

Streaming with Window Media Player? What's streaming?

Well if you all live in the same area it sounds like a server side issue....
MSN doesn't have a server every 15 miles (I think) so

Streaming can be explained the best way as sending video or audio over the internet in real time. If you don't have a very fast connection it was possible that it took all your bandwith leaving none for MSN Messenger.

I'm pretty sure its not steaming then. If it is the server do you know if it will be fixed?

hey ok i think im getting somewhere with this

ive had the same problem, on various installations of xp with a few versions of messinger.

i tried something today, which seems to have worked, i opened task manager, and started terminating processes at random, then after i decided ide done enough tried msn again, no luck, i shut down msn, and reopened it and its working perfectly, ill add an update next time i restart my computer as to what likly caused it. Ie by process of elimination, ill crash a process then try msn, then if still not working move to the next, untill i find the likly culprit.

but you are correct it is the most annoying problem i have delt with on a computer for a longgggg time its sooooo agrivating ahhhhhhhhh lol
