MSN IM causes 100% cpu usage

Running W2K with all the latest patches, Loaded MSN IM 7.0 with no errors. As soon as I sign in there is a lot of activity between CSrSS.exe and SMC.exe which starts at about 45% CPU usage and climbs over the next 10 seconds to 100% cpu usage. Then everything bogs down. Until I try to sign-in to MSN IM the computer seems to work fine and the usage will fluctuate but is usually around 6-12% when idle. Anybody heard of this problem before?

Welcome to BigBlueBall.

SMC.exe is Sygate Personal Firewall.

Disable the firewall whilst you try to sign into MSN Messenger, and see if the problem still occurs. Get back to us with the result.

Thanks.

EDIT - Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that version of MSN Messenger require Windows XP? That could be a cause...
