MSN Messenger Closes

I'am running MSN messenger 7.0..I'am able to sign in and stay signed in, unless someone starts a conversation with me, or I try to start a conversation with them. Once a conversation is started msn messenger freezes up, and then closes up on me after about 10 seconds.

I'm not too sure what is wrong, I scanned around, and I haven't found any viruses, any suggestions on what might be wrong?

Thanks in advance, it be greatly appreciated.

Which Operating System are you running? I think that version of MSN Messenger requires Windows XP.

It might also be an Internet issue, are you running any firewalls which may be preventing you from starting conversations? Or even any plugins for MSN Messenger which you have...try disabling them and see if it solves the problem.

I'm using Windows 98 Second Edition. I believe it was MSN Messenger 7.5 that only Wins XP users could use, cuz MSN notified me about it. I have no firewalls. I also disabled the plugins I have and restarted my computer, but msn is still closing.

Before this problem started earlier this morning, previously I tried to download a MSN Polygamy Patch for MSN 7, but an error occured and I figured the download never finished. Could it have and it's messing up my messenger? Because that's the only newest plugin I've attempted to install.

You'd still need to apply the polygamy patch, so I doubt it's that. I've dug out some System Requirements for v7.0, and they are as follows:

Quote:
Minimum System Requirements:
  • Multimedia PC
  • Pentium 233-MHz processor or better (500MHz recommended)
  • Microsoft Windows XP operating system
  • Minimum 64MB of RAM (128MB recommended)
  • Up to 50MB of hard disk space needed to install — after install, up to 15MB may be needed
  • 256-color VGA or higher resolution graphics card (SVGA recommended)
  • Minimum 800x600 screen resolution
  • Microsoft® Internet Explorer version 6 SP1 or later must be installed on your computer, though it does not need to be your default browser

Thanks for the stats. The only thing that I dont have is XP, I've been using MSN 7.0 since May of this year though and it's worked perfectly. So I'm not to sure why it's messing up now.

I would run adaware, spybot and system file checker. I know you said you checked for viruses but to be on the safe side if you havent ran http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ I would. Dont worry with the requirements 7.0 is for windows 98. http://messenger.msn.com/download/os.aspx. They chopped off windows 9x and windows 2000 in version 7.5. If none of that works maybe uninstalling it will help. Uinstall it then restart then run a registry cleaner, regseeker is free or get a trail of a paid one. Then install msn messenger 7.0 again.
