The Second solution worked for me. Untill I restarted messenger that is. Then it would put the shared key back in and the problem would be there. So i had to set permissions on the communications client above the shared key to deny on all users. That fixed the problem.

After following the advice on here to delete the Contacts Cache folders, I am unable to log into Windows Live Messenger. Since then I frequently receive error number 80072efd. Occasionally, I instead receive error number 81000378. I understand this is due to Windows Live Messenger having difficulty retrieving my contacts information from the Windows Live servers.

I am not running a firewall and have switched my antivirus software off. I am not running my internet through a router or LAN. I have tried flushing the DNS cache and deleting my handshaking policy cache (HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsLive\Communication s Client\Shared). I have tried fully uninstalling and reinstalling WLM and have tried all of the suggestions in Windows Live Help including registering the appropriate DLL files. I've checked the HOSTS file and it has nothing in except the default "127.0.0.1 localhost" entry

The Web Messenger works fine, I can connect to Windows update and use MSN Messenger 7.0. So there is nothing wrong with my PC or my connection. Can anyone help at all? I've been trying to log in for about 7 hours now and Microsoft's support are pathetic (I've emailed twice... No response).

Thanks in advance...

The problem was resolved eventually (18 hours later). I logged onto WLM at 3am yesterday and it connected fine. I guess the issue was that my client couldn't communicate with the WLM servers to retrieve my contacts information due to heavy traffic or a fault at their end. So, if you've tried everything and are at your wits end, try logging in again at an ungodly hour and you might just make it. They really need to do something about that considering how many businesses etc rely on WLM/MSN.

Oh, and their tech staff did respond and were very polite (but seemingly didn't read my email properly because they told me to try all of the same things I'd already tried numerous times). I suppose they're just doing their job, though I wonder if any of them would love to admit it's Microsoft's shoddy system rather than the users fault half of the time if they could get away with it...

I'm glad to hear your problem is resolved. There are so many people hitting the servers at any given time, I guess the liklihood of at least a few having troubles at any given time is high. I know how frustrating it is! Sometimes once you've tried the standard "fixes" all you can do is wait.

Either way - at least you are ok and running well again.

Once there, you must remove the following subkeys:
Shared

This is where you need to go. I have Windows Live Messenger as well and I had to locate Shared, not Policies.
i think i messed up because i probably deleted something in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
and now Windows live messanger wont start

Whenever you play with registry entries, it's always advisable to make a backup before you start so you can restore the registry if necessary. If something is messed up, be thankful it's not more serious than just WLM.

I'd suggest going to Add/Remove programs, uninstall WLM and try a fresh install. If that doesn't work, use the Windows Cleanup Utility to fully remove WLM, then try a fresh install.

Let me know if this helps.
