MsnMsgr.exe using all cpu resources

Hey there

I have some trouble with my msn. Actually, it's not just with msn, the problem persists also with iexplorer.exe and even sometimes with wmplayer.exe.

As stated in the headline, MsnMsgr.exe uses all my cpu resources whenever I try to log on. This goes for all the apps mentioned - whenever they go online, all my cpu resources are spent on that particular program.

I have tried several things. I have thoroughly searched for and destroyed any spyware, virus, trojan and so on, so that's not the problem. Furthermore, I have just made a repair of Windows using the folder i386 on the C-drive (btw, I use Windows Home), but as you can guess, that didn't help either.

If you have ANY idea of what to do, please let me know (anything else but a complete reinstall - please! :-/ )

Do you know when this problem started? Did you install any new programs during that time, or just before this started?

You can always try to do a System Restore a date when everything worked fine and see if that fixes it.

I know it's hard to believe, but it just started - I didn't do anything in particular, as far as I recall. ...and I'm afraid it's too late for a system restore - it's 3-4 weeks ago...

Xavis:

Welcome to BBB. If this problem is happening to all your programs, a possible (and notice I said possible) cause is defective RAM. How much RAM do you have? How long have you had the problem?

First of all: Yes, I have tried uninstalling msn and IE and installing the latest versions.

Secondly: Hm, well, it's not ALL my apps that have problems on the net. Firefox e.g. is running smoothly, but it seems as though that whenever some of MS' apps want to connect to the internet, the problem occurs. I have 1gb RAM and as I said earlier, the problem has been there for 3-4 weeks - I think it's since 10 January, or perhaps a few days earlier...not quite sure.

I really hope you can help me, guys - I have tried all kinds of things suggested in a couple of very competent Danish forums, but no luck! :-(

What firewall are you using? Have you tried disabling it?

I am using Zonelabs ZoneAlarm, and I haven't had any problems with either iexplorer.exe or MsnMsgr.exe before...so no, I haven't tried disabling it...

Xavis:
Version 6.xxx of Zone Alarm had thousands of problems; don't know whether the new version 7 is better or not.

This is a long shot but you can try these two things:
1) Disable Zone Alarm from starting up. Reboot. Check Task Manager.
2) If number 1 doesn't work, uninstall ZA. Then reboot.

Correct, ZA has quite a few issues (particularly w/ Messenger), so try what Philip said.
