*sigh windows live messenger 8.5

The same problem like EVERYONE on the net is having, the freeze after sign in. Although technically its not a freeze, i can click file edit view etc etc, but its just the contacts half of the screen that doesn't seem to like me... I've had this problem for about 3 damn months now and I've tried everything I can find on message boards and forums but nothing seems to work! Any suggestions?

I've tried using 8.5, 8.1, and 8.0. And msn 7.5, 7.0, and 6.2.

Windows messenger 4.9 I think it was and 5.1 seem to work fine

Oh god, PLEASE HELP. I've been trying for about 4 hours just today!

scythemaxwell, welcome to the BBB forums. Sorry to hear about your problems, but can you let us know what OS you're using, plus your present firewall. Have you scanned your system for viruses and spyware?

Try signing in with web messenger and see whether that works. Also, if you can get somebody else (who has a WLM account) to try signing in on your computer...we have to pinpoint where the fault lies...it could be at your end, or it could be at the WLM end.

I'm using windows xp home edition, i think.

I've signed in on windows live at internet cafes. And I don't believe I have a firewall running, unless you count windows firewall heh. I have AVG but thats all

I've tried deleting policies in the registry thing, I've scanned for viruses and spyware, I've got all the latest versions of adobe, shockware, and java, and tried uninstalling java to sign in and disable to live today window, and too much more. Tried to install IE7 but it won't work.( I use mozilla, but suggested just using IE) I don't have a router...and I can sign into webmessenger

oh and its a problem with everyone who tries to sign in on my computer

It appears like the problem is at your end. Could you post a screenshot when it freezes? I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say "it's just the contacts half of the screen that doesn't seem to like me..."

Since it worked with older versions of WLM, but not more recent ones, have you checked to make sure your computer meets the minimum specifications for running WLM these days? The latest version 8.5 requires service pack 2 for XP, an 800 MHz processor and 128MB of RAM (256MB recommended).

I have a contact with an older computer, who has not been successfully able to connect reliably since WLM7.0 came out as his processor is not fast enough. If that's the case, you can download the "new" old version http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/ms...indows-xp.html which requires a 233MHz (500MHz recommended) and 64MB RAM (128MB recommended.)

Did the problem start happening at a time when you upgraded to a new version of WLM or did it just seem to randomly happen one day? If it seems random, a HiJack This log may be in order to see if you have any browser hijackers that may be hindering you access to WLM. I've found 2 people with this problem in the last couple of months, and virus and spyware scans came up clean, but a HiJack log revealed other things going on. I'd be glad to help you if you need assistance in running/reading such a log.

We'll wait for a screenshot, but it may be worth checking to see if you do meet the specs for the version you are using, as I know my contact can access WebMessenger just fine just as you can. If you choose to try the new "old" version, please uninstall your current version first.

Also, are you running any 3rd party add-ons to WLM? If so, disable them and try to log in and see what happens.

We'll wait for a screen shot but please let me know if any of this is of any help at all.

Heres the screenshot, what I meant was, you can't click on any of the contacts or anything below that screen or it'll come up with the box in the picture, thats also if anyone speaks to me. I'll try the msn, but I'd also like to try the hijack log thing?

You can download HiJackThis here. Once you download and run it save it to notepad. There's a good tutorial on how to interpret it, but if you need help, feel freel to COPY and PASTE it into a PM (may take more than 1) and send it to me and I'll be glad to look at it for you.

I found a fair amount of things to get rid of via hijack this but it STILL doesn't seem to be working, i found a 'mywebsearch' thing in hijack this which ive been told can cause problems for windows live by someone on the support time so im going to reinstall live and try again. also I forgot this in my last post.
