Windows Live Messenger 2009 Problems!

ok so i upgraded my WLM to the 2009 version but 2 of my friends can't see me online even when i'm online. i can't see them either. they both use hotmail/live accounts btw.

to get rid of this problem, i deleted them from my friends list and added them again but was faced with this message:

also they didn't get any 'contact request' from me. i tried it the other way too, with them adding me, but even in that case i didn't get any contact requests.

just today i tried to add another friend in my contact list but was faced with the message above.

-

also every time i log in i get the following error message. i have to hide it from the screen and chat as clicking "don't send" shuts WLM down!

PLEASE HELP!

Hello and welcome to BBB! There have been numerous server issues in the last few days and I'm sure with the large number of upgrades going on there are going to be glitches.

On that first message - just wait it out and it will probably resolve on it's own. The message is telling you there are server issues - you can't fix those. You can try going to your Live/Hotmail and logging in to messenger from there. It may force the addition of the contact - it's worth a try. However, I see there are a fair number of people with this problem and it appears they are working on it.

As for the communications error, can you please give me a little more info? Are you on XP or Vista, do you have a Firewall and/or are you using a router? Have you had any other internet related issues you can think of? I can also find several people who say they have this problem but so far I don't see a specific reason listed, so we'll see what we can figure out based on your response.

thanks a lot for the reply!

the first problem - i actually went through the site before posting the problem and came across a few solutions but those are for versions 8.0 and 8.1. so i thought there might be a solution for this too.

anyway, as for the second problem, i use XP service pack 2 and i have my Firewall switched off. also, i don't use any router.

Well, no router and firewall off take care of what I would have tried.

Since you are on XP can I please ask you to try logging in to Windows Messenger? I know it doesn't have all the features but I'd like to see if it works properly for you. It may offer a temporary workaround.

Both the crashing issue and the contacts issues seem to be out there - and for a fair number of people. However, the WLM team is currently looking at them as machine specific and is working on it.

Did you by any chance lose any contacts in the upgrade or was it just the ones that wouldn't show online that you deleted and cannot re-add?

I'll keep an eye out for solutions, but I suspect you will need to be patient while they work on it. There are quite a few people having issues right now and it would appear from the responses that they indeed are looking for the causes and trying to fix it.

I might suggest you consider upgrading to SP3. While I have nothing to back this suspicion up, it is possible that the security fixes offered in SP3 and the subsequent updates that have followed, may be necessary to play well with the latest security changes in WLM. If you decide to do that and it makes any difference let me know. However, as you have viable workaround, SP3 is a long install, and it very well may NOT make any difference - I realize you may not wish to try it.

If I see any other suggestions you can try I'll let you know. Since you got the contacts added via ebuddy, I'll be focusing on the communications error while I watch for solutions.

I have not seen any of the hacks applied to this latest version at this point. There are articles out there on how to make your old version keep working, but I can't say that they will work with 8.1 or 8.5.

One forum poster said yesterday they reinstalled 8.5 and it was working for them. I doubt it would work for long if you managed to get it to function, but you could try it if you want.

Hi, I have the same problem, when I got WLM 2009, I got all those contact problems, so I've returned on WLM 2008 8.5.1302.1018 and it was perfect for me, then they had to ''close'' it, saying that we would have to use 2009 from now on, and obviously, I still have those problems with 2009, no matter how many time I re-installed 2009, my contact list and all my features had remains exactly the same like when I got 2009 for the first time, I hate 2009!! For me, it dosen't make any sense, I hope something will be done, or even, I would like to find someone who can bypass this stupid message about upgrading to the 2009 version.
