No alert sounds

Using Messenger Live 2009 w/ Vista64 and built-in webcam on HP Pavilion dv6-1280.

Able to receive mail, do video calls, send IM.

But, NO Alert sounds. Have checked mixer volumes (no mutes).

Also, when doing video calls, my voice comes and goes on the other end, though apparently fine on this end.

Any help appreciated.

From the Messenger menu go to Tools / Options / Sounds and ensure that "Mute all sounds" is not checked.

This has happened to me before, whether on my Vista 32-bit desktop or my Windows 7 64-bit laptop. Check your other programs (like Media Player), if they are working fine, chalk it up to a WLM glitch. If I get too annoyed all I do is close all my chat windows, exit WLM and restart. That usually works.

Re:No alert sounds

Pandoris,

"Mute all sounds" not checked.

On that same window, if I expand any of the messenger sounds, I have the same two choices:

For example, under Contacts Sign In, I get "Don't Play a Sound" and "Default." The latter is checked, and there is an arrow to play sound. When you click arrow, nothing happens.

All of the alerts on that page have the same two options, with "Default" checked.

Sounds to me like you're missing some sound files. When I expand mine (on a default installation) I have 10 different standard sound options, in addition to the default. Stands to reason if you don't have those, then the default is probably missing too.

First off, I'd suggest doing a repair of WLM. In Vista you would go to Start / Control Panel / Programs and Features. Find Windows Live Essentials. You will be prompted to Uninstall or Repair. Choose to "Repair" the installation.

Let me know if that takes care of the problem.
