How do people know you are online?

Hey all

How do people on your list know you are online when you are invisible? I am runing Y!tunnel (free version), have firewall and yet, everytime I come online under invisible mode, this guy on my list KNOWS I have come online. How is this possible? He refuses to tell me (he has since been removed from my list) and its just really annoying and frankly creepy.

Is he using a program? How do you stop people from seeing you when you dont want to be seen? I have also ran cleaners on my computer and no trojan.

Any ideas?

PS. I have also set the "let people see me online and contact me " option on off.

PPS. Is it possible that some people WRITE their own programs to see certain things about certain people, such as when they come online, what userID's they use when they dont want to talk to them (maybe see their IP) etc? Because this sucks! Why do people become so *bleeping* obsessed in chatrooms?!

I HEAR YA! I am sure that all of your id's are invisible, right? Not just the one you THINK he has? Have you tried the www.backdoors.to/yahoo option that Snuggle gave me (LONG AGO... and it's been a life saver thanks again!)? It has a link to remove YOU from HIS list. It worked for me... after a few times... (the guy kept secretly adding me) so I just kept erasing myself from HIS list. It is a buddy remover... so you can take yourself from his list... this might help you.... it is something to do in the meantime until someone more knowledgeable than I can answer you. Good luck!

yes, I have been to that site, but its exhausting! I keep removing my ID, but he keeps adding it. So I am going to delete the ID he has. however, my questions were also general for future psychopaths which I seem to attract like magnets...

Have you tried the "ignore" feature? I had some guy bugging me and it seemed to work. Its under privacy features.

That's a really good idea Mariette. But I think, I am just guessing here, that she wants to make sure that HE is online... so she can be prepared if he does something. But, if you still have his name on your list, that's how he's doing something. Follow Mariette's instructions.... see if it works.... and make sure he does not have other ID's of yours online. One time an ID I had long erased kept telling someone I was online... even when I was invisible. Have you dropped an ID that he had at one point?? The prob with that is you have to get it back again... take it off of his list... then get rid of it quickly.... but that's another option. I wish you luck.... just remember all of us are with you!

arwen about your questino on how people know exactly how your online well its like this. im not sure if your aware of this but the very moment you open your yahoo messenger and you sign on despite all the invisible option that your in, for a brief second its goping to show you as visible and then right away make you invisible. what i normally do is first log on to yahoo messenger with a different sn that i barely use and then later on change user to what ever name you use normally. it worked for me and im sure it'll work for you. so in other words when you start your pc and you decide to log on for the first time on messenger sign on with any sn and then later change user to your every day use sn and that should do the trick. its a glitch that has been on yahoo for quite some time, it wasnt always like this but i guess its here to stay.

milk I agree, the best method is to go under another screenname first and change user...another note to make is that; in some cases, if you have offline messages waiting, this will briefly make you visible as well. I have a worse problem at this time...no matter what settings I have in pref or status...I always am visible whether logged in or out! It's been this way since I set up my screen name.
