The last several posts about IP addresses are not all entirely correct so I'm here to set the records straight.

1). ISP's do not "drop" a user because someone said that they are doing something illegal. ISP's must have proof before kicking you off.

2). Spoofing an IP is rather easy but all that is good for is sending spam/doing a DoS attack. There really isn't much else that is good with spoofing an IP. Also reporting that IP as doing illegal activity (ie. a yahoo user recording the IP and telling that IP's ISP about it doing illegal activity) will do nothing. ISP's only do something to a user (ie kick them off) if they are deffinately doing something they shouldn't. They won't kick someone off with no proof of illegal activity or any activity that violates the agreement made with the ISP. And an ISP can tell if a user is or is not doing illegal activity.

3).

If you're on a constant connection, leave your computer on, and run Windows OS...they're already 90% of the way in.
That statement is very far fetched. Yes Microsoft is somewhat insecure but you pretty much have to do something to make yourself that insecure. Windows as it stands (which goes pretty much unchanged by most non-advanced users) isn't necessarily vulnerable to a "hacker" trying to gain access by means of just "using the IP address." If there isn't a trojan already on the system then chances of someone getting in are not that great. Not to mention, DSL/Cable modems have a built in firewall that is on by default.

You have to realise that most insecurities with Microsoft involve Internet Explorer and how vulnerable it is. Most break in attempts made against an operating system are based on the use of Trojans not on just someone trying to hack in. You also have to keep in mind that anyone with any capability of doing so wouldn't waste their time hacking people on Yahoo! You don't have anything important that they would need/want so why would they bother?

Also, just because you are on a Broadband connection with a static IP doesn't mean that you are any more vulnerable than someone on Dial Up who's IP changes.

Why dont you try netstat before sending an IM and after sending an IM, that way you will see a new IP add. the new one will be the direct connection you have made.
IM's don't necessarily establish a direct connection. In fact, the chances of it doing so are probably 100/1. Not to mention they have to be on your buddy list. You're most likely to just get the yahoo servers.

anyhow, i have a netstat question. i typed netstat after private messaging a buddy in yahoo. I've noticed several hosts names pop up in the list. How do i know which one is the persons using netstat to find their ip addres? i noticed dos prompt doesn't support DNS lookup to find ip that way. If you can help let me know, i wanna scare some lamer who got my ip address and visualroute his ip to his address to scare him off. thanks.
Try netstat -n. That shoes the IP address rather than the hostname. Also, you can't tell if someone is using netstat to find someone's IP. If you're worried about someone trying to get yours, don't use direct connections. Also, don't bother with scaring some lamer by doing a visual route. It won't do you much good. Chances are he/she knows about that too and thinks you can get a home address from the IP address. Just ignore him and forget that he exists.

Well, that's it for my ranting and raving for now.

if you want to get someone's IP address by messenger: sent him/her a file like 300k weight and while it's sending open the commandprompt and type "netstat" and you'll get a connection list. Anyways if you wanna enter his computer, you'll have to scan all his ports and if he has an IP address obtained by DHCP server then you woun't have a chance to enter it cuz the IP changes every 1 or 2 hour. As if he's behind a firewall or even a router there's less luck to enter his computer what is pathetic to **** someone's proprety....

Even if you are on DSL or T1 Connection you can release and renew your IP address by typing in ipconfig /release on a command line then type in ipconfig /renew this will assign you a new IP address. Just because this guy got your IP address doens't mean a whole lot. If he doesn't know anything about computers that is probably all he can do. Alot of times their bark is bigger than their bite. Just put him in perm. iggy and go on.

my request is, Can somebody tell me how can i trace IP address of the people I chat with on yahoo messenger? This is not for hacking or any other ideas you may have on your minds, but this is because, one guy did traced my IP address and i am scared that he might be some kind of psycho.

My purpose on knowing his IP address is, i wanted to scare him, that i also know his IP address, therefore he may stop on bothering me if he knows that i also know his IP address. he's just pissing me off!

thank you very very much in advance to anyone who can reply!

Alot of people don't try to use your ip address to hack you, they use it to hack others or paysites. to find a good anon proxy isn't that hard and you can mask your tracks by ALWAYS wearing a proxy(it's like sex)hehehe you really have nothing to worry about when someone has your proxy addy unless it is static, anon. most of these yahoo's just want it to bruteforce sites so they don't get popped for cracking porn sites YOU do! unfortunately

well im not really going to post anything long.. just few small things..

first.. read what zhugeliang said.. and listin.. hes one of the only people who knows what hes talking about.. and

second.. EVERYONE needs to stop thinking your computers are so insicure.. seriously.. just get a "decent" virus scan and your basically safe.. windows isnt the most insicure os in the world.. considering how masivly used it is.. its considerably safe..

virus scan will keep out little trojans (that most wanna be hacker kids.. who get on yahoo and aim to scare people use) and then they are worthless... because they dont actually know how to "hack"..

if you want to see someones ip you have to direct connect and use netstat -n in the command promp.. (use netstat -n then direct connect with the person and type netstat -n again and see whats new) even that doesnt work everytime though..

but why bother? just tell the kid hes a idiot.. and leave you alone.. someone posts this same thing on here seems like once a week

How do you find what city they are in? I have a site meter in my blog to keep track of whose visiting because I have an internet stalker who sent me threats and knows my physical address. He's really quite nuts, and I just want to monito who exactly is trying to read my blog. It logs IP's but when I trace them, it usually just gives me the address of their service provider i.e. comcast, pae inc.. etc... How can I be sure of where exactly this person is located?
[quote=Johnson]I steal people's ip's to trace what city they are in. Sounds harmless to me. But one thing to watch out for, if someone knows were u live, and knows your last name, they can very likely find out your address and telephone #. Online one thing you don't want people knowing is your last name, i have used peoples real names to trace their personal info. Ip's are virtually worthless, but if you d/l a lot of stuff, you should be very cautious, you need to make sure you don't have any trojans on your computer, if someone had your IP, they could scan u for trojans and then use them to gain remote access to your computer. To be totally safe don't d/l stuff. Personally someone telling you your ip isn't something to really be concerned about if you ask me. If anyone threatens their gonna hack me, i paste them my ip and tell them good luck.[/QUO

ok bascially go here http://dnsstuff.com/

then type there ip into "City From IP" and it should be at the top.. BUT its not 100% right and all that (it says im from atlanta, georgia and im from lawrenceville, ga) but at least it shows a basic idea of where they are... and you can report abuse and all that.. (gives emails in the look up)

heres example

IP: 68.XXX.XX.XXX
Country: United States
City: Atlanta, Georgia

(i added the x's) anyway that should help you out

Help

The easiest way to track an ip down to at least the closest exchange is to use msdos or command prompt...depending on os and use the tracert command...which most tracers use anyways.

on NT systems go to RUN and type in cmd

press return/enter

a dos box will open

type in tracert 216.155.193.170

a hopped search will begin ending in a trace complete or incomplete.

like the above will end in..

10 130 ms * 254 ms cs43.msg.dcn.yahoo.com [216.155.193.170]

This been a yahoo! chat server as an example.

There have been exploits on Yahoo! in the past to give out ip's without user consent but these have since been fixed by Yahoo!.

Programs like Y! Tunnel will let you disable peer to peer connections on Y! Messenger.

Users "Cannot" get your ip from Voice Chat ...(not including Yahoo!'s new beta 7.0 with sip in pm)

TIP* Do not take files form strangers and do not click links of strangers and still be weary of then 2 from buddys acting strange also.

special cases

Almost as smart as telling someone they live in georgia...

Almost as beneficial as Saying..oh they are from america..

Hence why with Tracert you can trace to nearest Exchange...not nearest state.

If you dont know what that is, don't worry about it.

But you know better, it took you near 4 posts just to post him a link...

Good man.
