Well, this isn't exactly the right place for that kind of question, but I'll give you a few pointers anyways. First of all, you should run an anti-virus scan to see if you have a trojan horse, which would allow them to see what you've typed (ie. passwords, usernames, credit card and banking info, etc.) and if that's clean, then lodge a complaint with to the company you were doing business at, and let them know what happened. You should also let you credit card company know, though they have probably contacted you and questioned you about it already. Hope this helps.

the thing is why hide IPs if they cant do anything with it. anyway get a firewall. best bet... some apps like spywares sends info out of your comp to the web...if your using firewall you can stop it if you want.

BlackPager® It's Scandalous...

There are some people out there who know exactly what they can and can't do with an IP address. Not to mention, a firewall won't guarantee that you're secure, but it's a good step toward it. If you have spyware on your computer, get ad-aware and spybot s&d, and that'll clean it off. Not to mention, spyware wasn't necissarily the issue in alamdarlo's case.

Hi.....quick question. Can someone trace my IP address from a simple Yahoo email and compare it to an email that was sent through my work email account? The yahoo one gives me a different IP than the work one does. The work one is one that I log into, an off site server, and the other is Yahoo....which can be logged on anywhere. Some guy claims that he has my IP address and is sending me harrassing emails. I sent myself an email from both accounts and clicked on "View Full Headers" and the IP addresses from both emails were different. And those two are different than the one on my DSL settings...Can he connect the two emails being from the same IP?

Okay, to answere Mica's question (which is actually kinda hard to understand ), did he say how he got your IP address, and if he has it, I can almost guarantee that he won't be able to do anything with it. If you want to know his IP address so you can report what he's doing to his ISP/the proper authorities, then this little bit of info might help you out. You see, when you send an email through yahoo, hotmail, or through anywhere else, it shows the IP address of the computer (or network if the computer is behind a proxy router) used to send the email. To check the IP addresses of an email message, go into your Outlook Express and right click on one of the messages, and click on properties. Then go to the "Details tab" and look for something like this:
X-Originating-IP: [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]
X-Originating-Email: [xxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com]
X-Sender: xxxxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com

The X-Originating-IP is the IP address of the sender, and if that is in the email, then you can do a reverse DNS (which can be done here www.DNSstuff.com {middle column second one down}) lookup of the IP address and then report the person to his/her ISP. I can almost guarantee that his ISP will at least send a warning to him that he is violating the user agreement. I know the ISP I work at does that . Anyways, other than that, there isn't much you can do. I wouldn't worry too much about him having your IP address, unless you've sent him an email, but you might also want to go ahead and run any anti-virus/anti-spyware programs you have. Hope this helps! ^_^

And for maiga, no, they cannot get your IP address from chatting in a regular web based chatroom. All messages that are posted in a chat room go through the yahoo servers, making it extremely really extra hard (yeah yeah, that didn't make much sense) to get your IP address. I'm sure there is some way to do it, but not many (if any) people know how to do it, and if your daughter spends her time in the teen rooms and such, then I'm pretty sure she (and your security) are pretty safe. Hope this helps ya both out! ^_^

Exactly. Basically, the servers act as a proxy server. Because of the way that chat rooms work, all messages are sent to the yahoo server and then forwarded to everyone in the room. It would cause a lot of problems to have all the messages sent in a chatroom go p2p to every user in the room directly from each other. Not only that, but you'ld also get the "IRC wars" that happen on IRC (where users boot each other by flooding a persons IP address with pings and DoS attacks) in order to take over a room. Granted you still have that in a way, with the booters, but there are 3rd party chat clients that help to deal with that problem. I hope this helps, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask! ^_^

thanks a lot , you seem to have a good knowledge on this subject, now my question takes a lil twist, so someone can get my ip adress and figure out what's my isp?(yahoo, msn, hotmail, etc.and if so then they can inqire about my info, I need to know this because my daughter says there are cops posing as kids in the chat rooms(wich I dont know if it's true,)she says they can get anyone's ip adress then get the personal info from the internet provider and charge the person(ussually old guys trying to pick up young girls), does this make sense? is it posible even for a cop to get the ip adress and if so I wonder how they do that since the chatrooms I allowed my daughter to chat you cant see anyones ip adress at first sight how would they go about geing it.
and do you know if an older guys can be charged with a crime just by chatting with my daughter? just chatting nothing nasty or anything but in a kids room, wondering just in case.
