Yahoo masks your IP when you are chatting in the main rooms. At best others will get yahoo's IP address. BUT if you connect to someone with a peer to peer connection they get your IP address. Peer to peer connections occur when file sharing (not through Yahoo's file share), PMs and using/viewing Cams. However if you are using a firewall you will not have to worry. Accepting files from strangers pose a far greater risk IMHO.
Just because someone has your IP address does not mean they can do anything with it. I agree with the suggestions of just putting the lamers who threaten you on ignore. Also set your PMs and invites to friends only. http://www.customcodes.com/tutorial/ |

ok, first click on START ( bottom left of screen)
then click on RUN, in the box type command this will open a new window ( all in black ) with something like C:\ in it type netstat , it will stay open and you can read the IP of any computer that is connected to your computer. Quote:

I am still trying to figure out How does it matter if that person has your ip or not. No you CAN NOT get an ip if it is just offline messages

I have a question regarding the IP Address. Can someone who has your IP address, locate your email address? I heard that someone who has in possession your IP address can in fact use an IP program to locate your GPS, but what about your email address. Is this possible? I am trying to trace a hacker, and I am considering buying a IP program to find out who hacked into my email account. But is it even worth it?

GPS= Global Positioning System or that is the only GPS I know and if you are refering to that I can not see what the connection is with GPS and an ip address. You can not find the mail ids of a person just from the ip address and No there is no way YOU can track a person who has cracked your account. Buying the ip prog is worthless

There are many tools available for IP tracing and there are free ones available all it will list however is the ISP domain that you have received an email from ( headers) or traceback from an IP thru your firewall to an IP addy. GPS will not locate a User unless of course you have plotted the direction in it, you need the address to plot. A GPS is designed only to locate plotted directions and to locate you in to relation to where you are in a given time. There are GPS designed for cars that attached to other software ( a Map similar to a headsup display in a plane) will guide you to a given plotted course. But it will not locate a Computer user from an email address as there currently no email address phone book ( thats worth a grain of salt). PS : The program I feel you are refering to I feel is McAfee Visual Trace |
