Can't get more then 1 Chat browser to open.
Hi Everyone! Glad I found this site a few weeks back and book marked it!
I've recently had some PC problems and they might be related to Yahoo chat so I figure I'd post here on the chance that maybe you fine people can offer me some help.
First off, let me say that I am running Windows XP home edition (firewall enabled) on a Duron 1.2Ghz, 512MB RAM system and am running the most recent version of IE. My PC has all the current Windows & IE updates as well. I am also running Yahoo IM version 5,5,0,1254 (because I don't like the latest version of Yahoo IM that doesn't let you save offline messages). I also have a cable modem connection for the Internet.
I am an avid Yahoo chat room participant. I guess I am what you'd call a lurker (well that's what someone called me of recently! lol). I usually enter 3 of my favorite chat rooms in the evening when I get home from work. I enter the chat rooms by launching 3 separate browsers and using a different alias for each room. When I enter the chat room, I have the option of using either 1) Java 2) Messenger or 3) Chat 2.0 for my Chat Software. I don't like the look of Java (even though everyone her says it's the least 'bootable'....but I have been lucky and rarely, if ever have I been booted). I tend to use Chat 2.0 for my chat software because the people here say that Chat 2.0 is less bootable then using Messenger. I never really had a problem with using Messenger as my Chat Software in the past however. It is not uncommon for me to be logged into a chat room the whole night until I log off the following morning (hey...I'm a lurker, like I said! lol)
Any ways, I've been chatting like this successfully for a few months now and besides an occasional hiccup, I have had no major problems. Well something really weird has happened to me yesterday and I don't know how to fix it. Basically what is happening now is as of yesterday when I went to get into the chats, I was only able to launch one instance of IE. When I attempted to launch a 2nd or 3rd instance of IE, the browser launched like normal (even showing my start page), but a Windows pop-up appeared saying, "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". At the bottom of this pop-up the usual, "Send Error Report" and "Don't Send" bars appeared too. In addition, I was able to have the pop-up show me the error report and here's what came up:
Error signature
AppName: iexplorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: winshow.dll ModVer: 1.0.0.8 Offset: 00002156
I was also able to click on another link that showed me the actual error report. It looked like a bunch of techno-weinie garbly gook to me and would be too large to try and copy here! lol
This problem kept happening when I tried to open a 2nd IE browser almost every time. I of course, rebooted my system, deleted all my history, cookies and offline files in my browser. I also did a disk cleanup and rebooted again. The problem is still present even though I have tried the above procedures numerous times. The 1st browser I launch works great every time. The 2nd one usually fails though. I have even tried changing the start (home) page of my browser thinking that would help but it didn't. Also, just for the record, I don't even have Yahoo IM running when I am trying this anymore but that doesn't seem to help either. I haven't installed any new programs or changed the settings in my PC recently and especially, didn't make any changes during the several hours preceding this problem. The only thing I was doing with my PC at the time when this problem first occurred was being logged into the Yahoo chat rooms.
As a temp fix, I downloaded Nutscrape 7.1 (oops...I mean Netscape 7.1) to see if it was an IE problem. Netscape will open as many instances of the browser itself as I want open at the same time with no problems whatsoever. The problem with Netscape (and Opera too which I later downloaded), is that 1) I don't like either one as well as I do IE and 2) When trying to enter the Yahoo chat rooms, I don't have Chat 2.0 & Messenger available as Chat Software choices to me with either of those browsers (only Java which I don't like).
Has anyone ever heard of such a problem? Do you think this problem may have originated as a result of being in the Yahoo chat rooms? Is there a way I might be able to remedy this without re-formatting and/or re-installing my OS on my HDD? I really don't want to re-install all my programs on my PC. If not, is there a way I can make Netscape or Opera so that I can use Chat 2.0 when I go into the Yahoo chats?
Sorry for the long story!
Thanking you all in advance for your help!

Well I was finally able to get my IE 6.0 browser problem fixed!
First off, I learned that Yahoo Chat 2.0 is only supported with IE, not Netscape or on Macs. It doesn't appear to be supported on Opera either. So I decided that I had to get my IE up and running again since I prefer Chat 2.0 to Java. Actually I like IE better than Netscape all the way around for that matter.
As for how I fixed my IE, I searched the Microsoft Knowledge database and the only think I could come up with is that I'd have to essentially reinstall my IE altogether. After reading up on what all was involved in doing that, I realized it wasn't a simple matter or using the Add/Delete feature in the Control Panel.
Fortunately, before I attempted to do a nondestructive system overwrite (which may or may not have solved my problem), my system restore disk prompted to me that if I had a Windows problem like I was having, that I might be able to use the 'System Restore' feature in my Windows XP Home edition instead of doing a system overwrite. I never used the System Restore feature before but it was easy enough to use and it worked like a charm! I was able to restore my system back to a few days before my IE quit working correctly. I still don't know why my IE quit working correctly but I do know that it happened one evening while I was a logged into the Yahoo chat rooms.
To access the System Restore feature, go to 'Start', 'Help and Support' and do a word search for: 'system restore'. When it comes up, just double click on, 'Run the System Restore Wizard' under the 'Pick a Task' column. Then choose the 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' option. That's it! Real easy!
Hope this helps some of you that run into a similar problem like mine.

Oh...after using the 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' just follow the prompts. It's very self explanatory!
I realized that I left that out in my previous post! lol

You could have tried Internet Explorer repair first, this is useful for anyone who has that problem, and doesn't use system restore and has no restore points.
It looks like something had changed a file in your system/a registry key and hence your problems.
You can start chat2.0 only in Internet Explorer it would seem, it needs Java to work, as it's DHTML based, and a browser fully able to implement DHTML.
Why messenger doesn't appear is weird, i never looked how they do it, maybe they use an IE feature to detect if you have it, but you could have just started it from the start menu etc...

Freddy,
How do I use the IE repair exactly? I didn't know it had one built in..
Also, what do you mean, "I could have started it from the start menu"?
Just curious

Internet Explorer Repair:
Start, (Settings), Control Panel, Add/Remove programs, select "Microsoft Internet Explorer" and press the "Add/Remove" button, from the new menu, select "Repair".
Yahoo! Messenger is installed on your pc, meaning you can start it like any other program from the desktop/start menu/system tray whereever it be.

Actually, I tried the 'Add or Remove Programs' feature to remove IE but IE was not shown as one of the listed programs I could remove. I even checked under the 'Add/Remove Windows Components' and it was not listed either. I am running Windows XP Home Edition so I don't know if that makes a difference...
