If you block port 3153 local port and 5050 also port 5101 that should disable messanger on that pc or you could download the sygate free firewall and disallow the messanger access to the net ( sygate firewall is password protected also )
    http://smb.sygate.com/buy/download_buy.htm download the free version

Or if you already have a firewall installed, most should have the ability to block specific applications access to the internet, as well as password protect firewall settings (so one cannot simply disable the firewall). If you are already running a firewall, you can check out the vendors website, or you can ask here, and someone will likely know the correct method for your software.

well we have zone alarm pro for the software side, but that can easily be circumvented by goign to the setitng and allowing access again...but

we also have a dlink di-604 4 port router/firewall and although i have denied access to ports 5050-5101 the yahoo messenger still gets through!?!? what is up with that?

does anyone know this model in particular.........or at least can someone explain general procedure for blockin ports

on a side note, i was able to succesfully block aim with port 5190 (i think) without any problems but even tho i have specified a whole range of ports for yahoo it still gets through

Here's my best advice for blocking Yahoo messanger download a program called aports this is a small program that tells you what ports are in use on the Pc and what app, is using them (exp ymess) in xp uses local port 3012 and a remote port 5050/ also local port 5101 ) http://www.softpile.com/Internet/Uti...354_index.html infomation page so you can read about it , the link to the download is http://www.softpile.com/Internet/Uti...d_07354_1.html
after you have blocked the ports yahoo is using you can see just how its connecting
shouldnt have anytrouble but if you do post back and ill help you all I can .

Messenger is a bit sneeky, if it can't connect on port 5050 it tries a whole host of other ports - 23,80 (and maybe 8080),21,25,119,20,37. Obviously blocking some of these ports on a router stops other services too.

Ports 5000 and 5001 are for voice, and 5100 for webcam. Voice will try TCP connection if it can't connect using UDP.
